Build a 4th of July display around the light and space you have, then choose flowers for the colors and shapes you want. Petunias, salvia, ageratum, verbena, cosmos and lobelia offer options for beds, pots and hanging baskets—but not every flower comes in all three colors, and cultivar availability and growing conditions vary.
Choose flowers by sunlight and display
A patriotic flower garden does not need one species in red, white and blue. A regional annual combination from Gardening Know How, for example, pairs red salvia, white petunias and blue ageratum. Treat color names as a starting point: “blue” flowers can vary by cultivar, so check plant labels and photographs before buying.
For a bed, start with the amount of sun and shade the site receives. For containers, also consider how plants will fit together: upright flowers add height, while mounding or trailing plants can fill the pot or spill over its edge. Group flowers with similar growing conditions rather than choosing by color alone.

1. Petunias: versatile color for beds and containers

2. Salvia: upright red, blue or white accents
Ornamental salvias include red, blue and white forms, with upright flower spikes that bring height to a bed or pot. The University of Minnesota Extension recommends full sun and well-drained soil for its salvia guidance. That advice is specific to its regional context; confirm local recommendations for the salvia species and cultivar you choose.
3. Ageratum: a compact blue note

6. Lobelia: trailing blue for pots and baskets
Lobelia is listed as a blue option for shade and as a trailing blue element in container combinations. Its trailing habit can soften the edge of a pot or hanging basket. Select a cultivar for the light and conditions where you plan to grow it.

For a sunny bed
Use a combination such as red salvia, white petunias and blue ageratum, following the Central Region example as inspiration rather than a universal planting prescription. Check local guidance for sun exposure, soil and cultivar suitability.

For a pot or porch display
Combine plant shapes so the arrangement reads clearly: use an upright flower such as salvia for height, then add a mounding or trailing flower such as petunias or lobelia near the edge. Ready-to-flower annuals are a practical choice when the display is needed soon. Seeds offer another route if you have time and suitable conditions to grow them. Local climate, cultivar and stock determine what is available and when it can be planted, so use local advice rather than a single nationwide calendar.

Other flowers can fill the palette
Geraniums, alyssum, snapdragons, begonias and impatiens are other possibilities in the cited flower guides. They are alternatives, not guarantees of a particular color or fit for every site. Confirm the cultivar’s color and growing requirements before adding it to the display.
