A vacuum cleaner draws debris through an intake, moves it along an airflow path, separates and collects dirt, filters the air, then exhausts that air. Its main parts are the cleaning head, ducts or hose and wand, motor and fan, dirt collector, filters, exhaust, controls and housing. Their arrangement varies by design and model, so use your vacuum’s manual for exact part locations and maintenance instructions.
How the main parts work together
Think of a vacuum as an airflow system: air and debris enter at the cleaning head, travel through passages, pass the motor-driven fan and dirt-separation and collection components, then move through the designed filtration stages and out through the exhaust. The housing, power source and controls support that process. A fault or blockage in one part can affect the whole path.
What are the main parts of a vacuum cleaner?
Intake and floor head
The intake is the opening where debris enters. On a floor-cleaning vacuum, it is usually part of the cleaning head. Some heads include a rotating brush bar to agitate debris; others use a different arrangement or do not have a brush bar. For example, Dyson identifies a removable brush bar on certain motorheads, but that is not a universal feature (Dyson troubleshooting support).
Hose, wand, ducts and seals
These parts carry debris-laden air from the floor head or an attachment toward the vacuum body. A canister or upright may have a flexible hose, a rigid wand, internal ducts, or a combination. Seals help keep the airflow path closed. Manufacturer guidance for particular models recommends checking ducts, pipes and seals when investigating a blockage or damage; their locations and removal methods vary (Dyson troubleshooting support; Dyson support).

Motor and fan
The motor turns a fan, producing the pressure difference and airflow that draw air and debris through the vacuum. These components are inside the machine and generally are not user-serviceable parts. Their design and repair instructions depend on the model.
Dirt separator and collector
The collector holds the debris the vacuum picks up. In a bagged vacuum, debris collects in a bag; in a bagless model, it typically collects in a bin, often after passing through a cyclone or another separator. Not every vacuum uses a clear bin or cyclone, and the procedure for emptying or removing the collector is model-specific (Dyson support; Dyson troubleshooting support).
Filters
Filters retain particles at one or more points in the airflow path. A vacuum may have a pre-motor filter, a post-motor filter, or other filtration stages, but the number, position, washability and replacement interval vary. Dyson’s product support illustrates that variation: some models have washable filters, while some post-motor filters are not intended to be washed (Dyson support; Dyson Gen5outsize product information).
Do not choose a replacement filter by appearance alone. Check the vacuum’s exact model and the filter’s position, then use the manufacturer’s compatibility information or parts catalog (Dyson support; Dyson replacement filter example).

Exhaust
After separation and filtration, air leaves through the vacuum’s exhaust path. The exhaust’s position and filtration performance depend on the model. A specification for one vacuum should not be treated as a performance claim for the entire category.
Controls, power and housing
The switch or other controls operate the vacuum; its cord or battery supplies power. The outer body, handle and wheels support and protect the machine and make it possible to move it. Their layout differs among upright, canister, cordless stick and handheld designs.

- 4.,Why do we need to replace the roller brush? Because after long-term use, the brush hairs of the roller brush will wear out under high-speed rotation. When in contact with the ground, they won't be able to do a good job of cleaning, so it is necessary to replace it. ,Delivery list: rolling brush*1, belt*1, cleaning brush*1,

How the layout changes by vacuum type
| Design or collection type | Typical arrangement | What to check in your model’s instructions |
|---|---|---|
| Bagged | A bag collects debris from the airflow path. | Bag access, fitting and replacement; filter locations. |
| Bagless | A bin collects debris; a separator such as a cyclone may separate dirt before filtration. | Bin or cyclone removal, emptying and cleaning steps. |
| Upright | The cleaning head and main body are generally combined in one unit. | Brush-bar access, airway locations and filter access. |
| Canister | The cleaning head connects to a separate body, commonly through a hose and wand. | Hose, wand and duct connections; collector and filter access. |
| Cordless stick or handheld | Components are arranged in a lighter, often battery-powered body; exact placement varies. | Battery, collector, filter and attachment instructions for the specific model. |
These are broad layout distinctions, not rules for every product. A bagless canister diagram, for example, is not a universal vacuum diagram (Dyson support).
Which parts may need inspection or replacement?
- Filter: Inspect or clean it only as the manual directs. If replacing it, match the exact model and filter position; filters that look alike are not necessarily compatible (Dyson support; Dyson replacement filter example).
- Brush bar: Check for tangled material only if your floor head has a brush bar and the manual permits access. Replacement brush bars are model-specific (Dyson troubleshooting support; Dyson support).
- Airway parts and seals: A hose, wand, duct or seal may need attention if airflow is obstructed or a part is damaged. Other replaceable parts can include a bin; confirm the correct part for the model before ordering (Dyson support).
- Bag or bin: The collection system needs the model-specific emptying, fitting or replacement procedure. Do not assume a bagless procedure applies to a bagged vacuum.
Safe checks for reduced suction or a blockage
- Switch off and disconnect power. Turn off and unplug a corded vacuum before inspecting it. For a cordless machine, follow its manual’s instructions for making it safe to work on.
- Check accessible airways. Inspect the hose, wand, head and other user-accessible ducts for a blockage or damage. Use the manual’s method to remove parts; avoid sharp objects when clearing debris.
- Check the collector and seals. Empty or reseat a bag or bin as directed, and inspect accessible seals and connections.
- Inspect filters and the brush bar if applicable. Follow the exact model instructions. Do not wash a filter unless the manual says it is washable, and never refit a washable filter while damp.
- Reassemble before use. Refit required parts securely. Do not operate the vacuum with a required component missing.
Filter care depends on the model
There is no single filter-washing schedule for all vacuums. As one model-specific example, the Dyson DC27 manual instructs users to switch off and unplug the machine before removing its filter, wash it according to that manual, and allow it to dry completely for 24 hours. It recommends checking and washing the filter at least every three months for the DC27. Those directions do not establish a schedule for other models (Dyson manuals and guides).
