The “Pendulum Doll Cradle Woodworking Plan” is a plan for building a rocking, pendulum-style cradle sized for dolls around 18 inches long—not a finished cradle. The listed project measures 24 inches long and 17 inches high. It dates to 2002 and is identified by WOOD Magazine as a project from issue 145, November 2002.
What the plan includes
WoodworkersWorkshop lists the plan under kids’ toys and furniture, credits Jeff Mertz as the author and Owen Duvall as a contributor, and gives its publication date as 2002. The listing describes a six-page English plan available in paper or PDF format. It says the pages include building instructions, finishing guidance, and templates for curved profiles.
The listed wood options are cherry, pine, or another wood of the builder’s choice. The tools named include a table saw, planer, bandsaw, drill, and router, along with other common workshop tools. Treat that as the listing’s equipment guidance rather than a complete, version-specific cut list: the available description does not enumerate every component or operation.
Dimensions and intended doll size
WOOD Magazine’s page for the project identifies it with issue 145 (November 2002) and gives dimensions of 24 inches long by 17 inches high. It says the cradle is scaled for popular dolls around 18 inches long. WoodworkersWorkshop gives the same overall dimensions, also listing the length as 61 cm and the height as 43.2 cm.

Those measurements describe the cradle, not the doll. A doll’s pose, clothing, and proportions can affect fit, so compare the doll’s actual length and width with the finished cradle before building if a close fit matters.
How to distinguish it from Woodcraft’s related plan
Woodcraft also lists a doll-cradle plan, but its stated scale and dimensions differ. Do not use its measurements as specifications for the exact-title WOOD Magazine project.

Woodcraft’s article “Pendulum Doll Cradle,” originally published October 1, 2008 and updated April 30, 2026, offers construction context for a related version. The article describes adapting procedures from a full-size cradle, so its details should not be treated as verified instructions for the 2002 WOOD plan.

For readers evaluating the general woodworking involved, Woodcraft’s related article describes using half-inch stock for many parts and laminating the feet. It discusses drilling dowel holes, shaping curved profiles, joining the end and side assemblies, and beveling the bottom panel by 10 degrees. These are details of that article’s version, not a substitute for the exact-title plan’s drawings and instructions.

In its pendulum assembly, the article describes fitting dowels into holes in the uprights so the cradle can pivot without binding. It also describes glue-and-clamp assembly. For a clear finish, its example is two coats of satin polyurethane, sanding with 220-grit paper between coats. These are article-specific examples; follow the finishing and assembly directions that accompany the plan version you obtain.
Quick Recap
Check before choosing or building
- Confirm that the plan is the WOOD Magazine project associated with issue 145, rather than a similarly named cradle plan.
- Check that the listed 24-inch length and 17-inch height suit the intended room and doll.
- Verify that the copy you purchase includes the curved-profile templates and the instructions you expect; the listing describes these as included.
- Review the required tools and materials against your workshop and chosen wood before starting.
- Keep instructions for related versions separate during layout and assembly, especially where dimensions, joinery, and pivot details are concerned.
