Goliath CNC is a portable router robot designed to move over the material being cut instead of operating within a fixed table or gantry. That makes “unrestrained by tables” a description of its mobile layout—not a promise of unlimited work area or unrestricted cutting. Springa’s published specifications and workflow details date to 2017, so they are useful for understanding the concept but should not be treated as confirmation of what is currently sold or supported.
How Goliath’s mobile CNC layout works
On a conventional CNC router, the workpiece sits on a bed and the machine moves a cutter through a defined gantry or table area. Springa designed Goliath to travel across the workpiece instead. Its campaign describes sensors detecting the material’s edges and software calculating paths that avoid edges and existing pockets. Custom omnidirectional wheels, each using multiple rollers, were intended to maintain contact as the robot crossed cut grooves; the FAQ also says a positioning system could correct its route if wheels slipped. These are Springa’s design explanations, not independently verified performance results.
Springa’s Kickstarter campaign ran from October 3 to November 18, 2017. It received $1,072,544 in pledges from 716 backers against a $90,000 goal. Those are crowdfunding figures, not counts of machines shipped or evidence of customer satisfaction. View Springa’s Goliath CNC Kickstarter campaign.
Work area: mobile, but not unlimited
Springa’s campaign FAQ, last updated October 17, 2017, gives a sensor-based working area of 3 × 2.5 m (9.8 × 8.5 ft), which it says may be extended. It also suggests a minimum area of 2.62 × 2.62 ft. The campaign’s “virtually unlimited” phrasing refers to the mobile concept; the figures still require a suitable, clear work surface and planned boundaries for each job. 2017 specifications and stated cutting capabilities
The following values are historical claims from Springa’s 2017 Kickstarter FAQ, not current specifications independently tested or confirmed here.

The FAQ lists plywood, MDF, bamboo, solid wood, plastic sheets, and thin aluminum as materials. Those are stated capabilities, not independent test results; material, bit geometry, and job conditions matter. The stated shank sizes likewise do not establish that every bit shape is suitable for every material or cut.

CAM software and cut planning
Springa said Goliath accepted DWG, SVG, and AI design files, then used its own CAM software to generate G-code. The FAQ cautions against using G-code from other CAM software because it may not account for the robot’s wheel positions or plan safely around pockets and already-cut surfaces. In practical terms, a design file format being accepted does not mean arbitrary machine code is compatible. The FAQ described wireless transfer and monitoring by computer, smartphone, or tablet, but its references to Windows, iOS, and Android were development plans; they do not establish present-day operating-system support.
Pocketing and 3D carving
For pockets and large holes, Springa’s described sequence cuts profiles first, then starts pocketing from an upper corner and works backward to help avoid driving into the robot’s own cut. Its FAQ distinguishes the machine’s central 2.5D cutting purpose from 3D carving, which it described in 2017 as something to test and develop. It also says 3D carving needs a pocket-free area large enough for the machine footprint at the end of the job, or an added panel. This is not evidence that a mature 3D-carving capability is currently available.

Safety and maintenance claims
Springa’s 2017 FAQ says a front bit cover stops the machine if removed and an inertial platform stops it if overturned, bumped, or accidentally moved off a work surface. These old manufacturer statements do not establish safety certification or remove ordinary CNC risks, including rotating cutters, flying chips, noise, and dust. Treat the machine as power-tool equipment and verify current documentation, required protective measures, and applicable safety standards before use.
The FAQ describes routine router-bit maintenance and wiping the machine clean, especially after a job. It does not establish current consumable availability or service arrangements.

What to verify before buying or specifying one
The Kickstarter landing page includes a “Buy now” link and shows a latest-update date of December 23, 2025, but that date does not confirm current inventory or support terms. The reviewed campaign materials do not establish present price, warranty, shipping, repair support, software status, or independent performance testing. Confirm those details directly with Springa before making a purchase or planning a project around the machine.
For a construction or shop workflow, compare a mobile router robot with a fixed CNC router on the points that affect the job: usable work area and setup footprint, whether the machine or workpiece moves, stock and thickness limits, cutter-shank compatibility, CAM/postprocessor requirements, current software and support, safety certification, and price and availability. The historical Goliath figures above cannot substitute for current comparable specifications.
