Should You Use Epsom Salt on Your Lemon Tree?

Epsom salt is not a routine tonic for lemon trees. Use magnesium sulfate only when magnesium deficiency and soil conditions make it an appropriate option.

Use Epsom salt on a lemon tree only when magnesium deficiency is a credible diagnosis and the soil conditions support it. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate—not a general-purpose plant tonic—and yellow leaves alone are not enough reason to apply it.

What Epsom salt can—and cannot—do

Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur. For citrus, its relevant use is correcting a magnesium shortage; it is not established as a routine growth booster for every lemon tree. UF/IFAS says soil-applied Epsom salt or magnesium oxide can correct magnesium deficiency when soil pH is adjusted. UF/IFAS, Citrus Problems in the Home Landscape.

That qualification matters: adding magnesium without a need may not address the actual cause of poor growth or leaf discoloration. Citrus magnesium deficiency can be associated with low soil magnesium, leaching in acidic sandy soil, or imbalances involving calcium or potassium. UF/IFAS, Macronutrient Deficiencies in Citrus: Calcium, Magnesium, and Sulfur.

Why yellow leaves are not a diagnosis

Leaf symptoms can resemble damage from disease, pests, nematodes, flooding, or other stress. Drought, flooding, root damage, and cool weather can also affect nutrient uptake. A visual symptom can prompt investigation, but it cannot establish that magnesium is the problem.

Check the tree’s growing conditions and soil pH, and consider soil testing; leaf-tissue analysis may also be useful in the right context. UF/IFAS notes that soil and leaf tests serve different purposes, so test results should be interpreted with the tree’s symptoms and conditions rather than treated as interchangeable. UF/IFAS, Diagnostic Nutrient Testing for Commercial Citrus in Florida.

Choose a treatment based on soil conditions

What the diagnosis indicates Option to consider Important qualification
Soil pH is too low Dolomitic lime may be appropriate It can address acidity while supplying magnesium; follow local recommendations and test results.
Magnesium deficiency, high soil calcium, and pH in a suitable range Magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) may be an option UF/IFAS describes this as a conditional choice, not a blanket application for all lemon trees.
Deficiency is not confirmed or another stress may explain symptoms Investigate before applying a magnesium product Correcting the wrong problem may leave the cause unresolved.

The 2026–2029 Florida Citrus Production Guide gives a soil pH range of 5.5–6.5 as Florida production guidance for avoiding some nutrient deficiencies. That range is specific to the guide’s regional citrus context; it should not be treated as a universal target for container lemons or lemon trees in every region.

Do not guess at a dose or schedule

The cited UF/IFAS guidance does not establish one universal home lemon-tree rate or application schedule. The right choice depends on soil pH, magnesium status, possible calcium or potassium imbalance, and whether treatment is directed to soil or foliage. Use test-based, locally applicable instructions rather than copying a dose from an unrelated citrus system.

UF/IFAS also describes foliar magnesium nitrate as a specialized option for spring flush leaves when they are two-thirds to fully expanded but not yet hardened off. This is not a default home-gardening substitute for diagnosis. Existing leaves with deficiency patterns may not fully recover; correcting the problem can help prevent symptoms in a following season.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Look beyond the leaves. Note watering, drainage, recent weather, root disturbance, and possible pest or disease problems.
  2. Check soil pH and magnesium status. Use an appropriate soil test, and seek local extension or laboratory guidance about whether leaf-tissue testing is useful.
  3. Match the response to the result. Low pH may point toward dolomitic lime; magnesium sulfate may be considered in some high-calcium soils when pH is suitable.
  4. Follow local directions. Do not apply a generic internet dose when the evidence and conditions do not establish that it fits your tree.

What to expect after correcting a deficiency

Treatment is aimed at correcting the underlying nutrient problem, not instantly restoring leaves that already show symptoms. UF/IFAS notes that affected leaves may not fully recover, while correction may help reduce deficiency symptoms in a subsequent season. Continue to assess new growth and the tree’s conditions rather than repeating applications automatically.
