For artisan bread, start with your slices—not a toaster’s “wide slot” label. Measure the length and thickness you typically cut, then check the exact model’s current specifications. KitchenAid, Oster and Breville each describe toaster models intended for homemade, craft or artisan-style bread, but the available evidence does not establish one as the overall best.
What matters when toasting artisan bread
Slot fit is more than width
Artisan loaves can produce slices that are longer, thicker or less regular than standard sandwich bread. A long slot may make a larger slice easier to place, but it does not guarantee that every shape will fit or brown evenly. The cited product pages do not provide a directly comparable set of slot dimensions, so check the specifications for the exact regional model against the bread you usually cut.
- Compare slot length with the longest slice you expect to toast.
- Check width and your typical slice thickness, especially for dense or irregular loaves.
- Consider whether a long, flatter slice would need to be cut to fit.
Match controls to how you toast
Shade settings let you choose a preferred level of browning. Other controls can be useful for particular routines: defrost for frozen bread, Bagel for bagels, and an extra-time function when a cycle needs a little longer. Features vary by model, so focus on the controls you will actually use.

How to choose for your bread
- Measure a typical slice. Use the longest and thickest slices you normally make, including any unevenly shaped pieces.
- Check the exact toaster listing. Compare its current slot dimensions with those measurements rather than relying on “long-slot” or “extra-wide” wording alone.
- Choose the controls you need. If you often toast frozen bread or bagels, look for those specific settings. If you adjust browning frequently, compare shade controls and any lift-and-check or extra-time functions.
- Keep evidence in perspective. Manufacturer pages support feature and intended-use claims. The KitchenAid review offers one independent account, not a head-to-head test of these models.
