If the bit slips instead of catching, stop: repeated slipping can make the screw harder to remove. A thin rubber band, screw-extracting pliers, or a precision extractor may help, depending on how damaged and accessible the screw is.
Start with a driver that fits
Clear loose dirt from the screw head, then choose the driver that matches its recess and size. Press it straight down so the tip is fully seated, and turn slowly with controlled pressure. Keep the screwdriver aligned with the screw rather than leaning it to one side.
If the first driver does not catch, cautiously try a different size or a flathead that fits securely across the damaged recess. Do not force a bit that rocks or slips. Stop as soon as it fails to bite; continued slipping can worsen the damage.
Try a thin grip layer
Stretch a thin rubber band over the screw head, place the screwdriver into the recess through it, and turn slowly while maintaining downward pressure. The band may fill some of the gaps and add friction. A thin piece of fabric is another possible grip aid, but neither method is guaranteed to work.

Use pliers when the head is exposed
If enough of the screw head sits above the surface to grip, screw-extracting pliers may let you turn it from the outside. Clamp securely and rotate slowly. Once the screw loosens, switch to a screwdriver if that gives you better control. Pliers are not useful when the head is flush or recessed and cannot be gripped.
Consider a precision extractor for severe damage
A precision screw extractor is a targeted option when the drive recess is too damaged for an ordinary driver. Check that the extractor is suitable for the screw’s size and that there is enough clearance to use it without contacting nearby surfaces or components. No particular extractor model or success rate is established here, so treat it as an option rather than a guaranteed fix.

Reserve cutting a slot for a last resort
iFixit describes using a rotary tool and cutting disk to make a new slot for a flathead screwdriver. This is more invasive than the hand methods above: the cut can damage the surrounding material, and the tool can produce flying debris or sparks. Wear safety goggles. If you are working on electronics, keep metal shavings out of the device. This is not a simple hand-tool method, even though it avoids drilling.

For a small screw near finished construction materials or sensitive equipment, favor the least invasive method that can engage securely. If every attempt slips, pause rather than escalating force.
