To make a small apartment feel bigger, keep walkways clear, let light travel, use vertical storage, and choose furniture that fits the way you live. These changes can improve the sense of space and make a home easier to use, but they do not add square footage. Pick ideas that suit your room, daylight, budget, and lease.
Start with light, mirrors, and windows
Light-colored finishes and reflective surfaces can help a room feel more open when they make good use of the light already available. A mirror is most useful when it reflects a window or another bright area; a mirror facing a dark wall may add little. Choose a size that suits the wall, and mount it securely. An over-door mirror can provide a full-length reflection without taking up floor space.
- Place a large mirror to reflect light. Try a wall that catches a window or a bright part of the room. IKEA’s studio-apartment guidance also suggests positioning a large mirror opposite a window: IKEA studio apartment decorating guide.
- Match mirror scale to the wall. A tiny mirror on a large blank wall may look out of proportion; choose a size that works with nearby furniture and available mounting space.
- Use an over-door mirror where a wall or floor location is impractical. Check that the door can still open and close freely.
- Add a table lamp to a dim seating or reading spot. Direct light where it is needed instead of relying on one ceiling fixture.
- Layer task lighting with ambient light. A floor lamp, table lamp, or task light can make different parts of a room useful without flooding every area with the same brightness.
- Consider a plug-in or battery-operated sconce. Choose a location with suitable power or a practical battery-access plan, and confirm the mounting method is allowed.
- Raise the curtain rod. Lowe’s advises placing it above the window and as close to the ceiling as practical, provided the curtains can still be used comfortably. See Lowe’s small-apartment decorating guide.
- Extend the rod beyond the window frame when space permits. Open curtains can then sit farther from the glass.
- Choose floor-length curtains without excessive pooling. Alexandra Gater’s guidance, reported by Georgia Public Broadcasting, suggests starting 6 to 12 inches above the frame and extending 5 to 10 inches beyond it on each side; she says hems should just “kiss the floor.” These are design suggestions, not a fixed standard, and she notes that homes differ. Georgia Public Broadcasting report.
- Choose window-covering opacity for the room’s real needs. Balance daylight with privacy and sleep requirements rather than selecting a treatment for appearance alone.
Arrange the layout to protect circulation
A small home feels crowded when furniture blocks the route through it or every function competes for the same area. Plan around daily use first: where you walk, eat, work, rest, and welcome guests. In a studio, rugs or a divider can signal zones without implying that the apartment has gained physical space.
- Define separate zones in a studio. Arrange furnishings to distinguish living, dining, and work areas where those functions matter.
- Use a rug to anchor a seating group. A rug can mark the living zone and add warmth to hard flooring.
- Float furniture only when circulation remains comfortable. Designer Alexandra Gater offers 18 to 24 inches of walking room behind a sofa, side table, or armchair as one example for creating a sense of depth—not as a universal clearance rule. Georgia Public Broadcasting report.
- Keep the main walking route clear. Look at the path from the entrance to the areas you use most, and avoid making it weave around extra furniture.
- Use a bookshelf or room divider when separation is genuinely useful. It can signal a boundary or provide some privacy, but its footprint and effect on daylight should fit the room.
- Anchor a floating arrangement. A rug, shelf, or console can give furniture a clear relationship to the space instead of leaving pieces scattered.
- Design for your actual routines. A studio need not imitate a conventional layout if that arrangement makes daily life less practical.
- Choose a dining table for the available space. Add occasional seating when needed rather than leaving extra chairs in the walking area.
Gain storage without crowding the floor
Use walls and height for storage when it is practical and permitted. Multi-use furniture can reduce the number of separate pieces, but only if you will use its extra function and can still reach what it stores. A compact item is not automatically space-saving if it blocks a door, walkway, or drawer.

- Use tall shelving. It adds storage vertically and draws the eye upward. Secure it appropriately and check whether your lease permits the fixing method.
- Mount shelves for items that need not sit on the floor. Keep frequently used items reachable and avoid overloading the wall or shelf.
- Choose a storage ottoman when it replaces another piece. It can serve as seating and concealed storage, provided it fits the seating area.
- Consider a storage bench in an entry or at the foot of a bed. Measure the clearance needed for doors, drawers, and walking paths before bringing one in.
- Use a bed frame with storage only if it remains accessible. Drawers are less useful when the room layout prevents them from opening.
- Choose a sofa bed, sleeper sofa, daybed, or futon for occasional guest sleeping. Compare its dimensions in both everyday and sleeping configurations.
- Combine entry seating and coat storage. One piece may replace a separate table and rack if it suits the entry’s dimensions.
- Give coats, bags, and keys a defined landing place. Hooks and a shelf can keep these items off chairs and counters; check whether screw-mounted or adhesive hardware is allowed.
- Use kitchen furniture for more than one task where suitable. A table can serve for dining and food preparation if its size and surface work for both.
- Put infrequently used items out of sight. Closed or tucked-away storage can reduce visual clutter without making everyday essentials difficult to reach.
Use color and finishing touches deliberately
Consistent finishes and appropriately scaled decor can reduce visual interruptions. The goal is not to remove personality, but to keep surfaces and sightlines from feeling busy. Color choices are a design preference, not a measured way to increase room size.

- Use a consistent palette across connected rooms. Repeating a few colors can make transitions feel less abrupt. Gater describes consistency as having more impact; this is designer guidance rather than a quantified result. Georgia Public Broadcasting report.
- Consider color drenching where appropriate and permitted. Using one color across multiple surfaces can soften visual boundaries; the recommendation is subjective and may require landlord approval.
- Avoid accumulating many undersized decorative objects. Numerous small pieces can make a room feel visually busy—the “dollhouse effect” described in the Georgia Public Broadcasting report.
- Choose one or a few appropriately scaled art pieces. A considered arrangement can feel calmer than filling every wall and surface.
- Use a rug for warmth or to cover worn flooring where appropriate. Check that its size does not create a trip hazard or interfere with doors.
- Add plants suited to the available light. If natural light or upkeep is a problem, faux greenery is an alternative.
- Consider a headboard with built-in shelves. It can provide bedside storage where there is little room for separate tables.
- Use movable floor cushions or poufs in a small seating area. Put them away when extra seats are not needed.
Before buying or mounting anything
- Measure the room and the item. Include door swings, drawers, and the space needed to walk around or use a piece in each configuration.
- Ask what the item replaces or improves. A multifunctional piece is useful when its second purpose fits your routine, not simply because it has multiple labels.
- Check light and electrical access. A lamp or sconce needs a workable location and, where applicable, a suitable outlet or battery setup.
- Check your lease and property rules before painting, drilling, or using adhesives. Lowe’s cautions that renter rules differ; confirm what is permitted before installing shelves, mirrors, hooks, or curtain hardware.
- Prioritize clear paths and accessible storage. A useful layout should remain convenient after the change, not just look less crowded in a photo.
