PP is the lighter option in the cited grade examples, and one cited PP grade has a 165°C melting point. The cited high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) grade is denser and lists an 85°C Vicat softening temperature. Those figures come from different grades and test methods, so they are not a direct heat-performance comparison. Choose by the actual grade, product design, exposure and required performance—not by the polymer abbreviation alone.
What the names mean
Polypropylene and polystyrene are polymer families, not single fixed specifications. A grade’s formulation, additives, processing and product form can affect its properties. Polystyrene also includes distinct forms: the high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) grade cited here should not be treated as interchangeable with general-purpose polystyrene (GPPS) or expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam.
For a building component, identify the exact product and grade first. A resin-family comparison can narrow options, but it cannot establish that a particular part will meet a load, temperature, impact, code or service-life requirement.

Which material may suit a particular requirement?
When low weight matters
The cited PP examples have densities of 0.898 and 0.905 g/cm³, while the cited HIPS grade has a density of 1.04 g/cm³. That supports a lower-density comparison for these examples only. A finished part’s weight also depends on its dimensions, geometry, reinforcement and manufacturing method.

When heat exposure matters
Do not select a plastic for a service temperature by comparing the 165°C PP melting point directly with the 85°C HIPS Vicat value. They describe different behavior. Request temperature ratings and test data for the exact product under conditions that resemble its use, including sustained heat and any mechanical load.
When stiffness, impact or appearance matters
Polystyrene grades are used where stiffness, clarity, dimensional stability or ease of processing is useful, but those are broad tendencies, not promises for every PS product. HIPS is a distinct grade type; its impact data cannot be extended to GPPS or EPS. Likewise, an “impact grade” label and a single notched Izod figure are not enough to predict how a finished part will perform in a real installation.

When a foamed product is being considered
EPS is expanded polystyrene foam, not the same product form as the solid HIPS grade in the cited data. Compare the specific foam product and its intended application rather than applying solid-resin figures to it.
Questions to settle before specifying either resin
- What loads, impacts and dimensional tolerances must the part withstand?
- What temperatures will it encounter, for how long, and under what load?
- Will it face water, cleaning agents, solvents, UV exposure or other chemicals?
- Does the application require transparency, a particular surface finish or a foam form?
- Is it part of a regulated application, such as food contact, and is compliance documented for the exact finished article and jurisdiction?
- What collection or disposal route is available where the product will be used?
- Which product specification, test method and acceptance criteria will the supplier provide?
Recycling symbols and food-contact claims
A resin identification code helps identify a container’s material for sorting; it does not guarantee that a local recycling program accepts it. The Plastics Industry Association describes its voluntary rigid-container material code guidelines as a sorting aid. Check local program rules for the specific item rather than inferring acceptance from the resin code.

Neither “PP” nor “PS” alone establishes that a product is safe or legally suitable for food contact. The exact grade, finished article, intended conditions and jurisdiction’s rules matter. The Plastics Industry Association’s guidance on recycled plastics for food contact addresses compliance considerations for post-consumer recycled plastics; it does not certify every PP or PS product.
