A skimmer and a filter do different jobs: a skimmer collects floating leaves and debris at the water’s surface, while a filter traps particles, processes fish waste biologically, or does both. A pond with few or no fish may not need a filter; a pond with fish is more likely to need filtration. Whether you need a skimmer, a filter, or both depends on your pond’s fish load, debris, size, and equipment layout.
What does a pond skimmer do?
A pond skimmer draws floating leaves and other surface debris into a collection area before they sink and decompose. Aquascape describes its primary job this way: “The primary job of a pond skimmer is to remove floating debris off the surface of a pond before it has a chance to sink to the pond floor.” In Aquascape’s system, the skimmer can also conceal and house the pump.
A skimmer is primarily a surface-cleanup component. It does not, by itself, provide the biological processing of fish waste that a pond with fish may need. If you are considering one, check the model’s installation style and compatibility with your pump and plumbing.
What does a pond filter do?
“Filter” can mean different things. Mechanical filtration uses media such as foam or matting to trap physical particles. Biological filtration provides a surface for beneficial organisms to process waste compounds produced by fish. Tetra describes this part of the nitrogen cycle as converting harmful ammonia into relatively less harmful nitrate. Some filters combine mechanical and biological filtration.
#1 Best Overall
- Specifically Designed for Water Gardens and Koi Ponds: Helps maintain clean, clear water in outdoor ponds up to 250 square feet or 3,000 gallons by skimming and removing floating debris before it sinks.
- Two-Stage Mechanical Filtration System: Includes a durable debris net to capture larger floating materials plus a Matala filter mat to trap finer particles, helping keep pond water clean and clear.
- Helps Protect Your Pump from Clogging & Damage: For optimal performance, use water flow rates ranging from 1,200 to 5,000 gallons per hour.
- Natural-Looking Faux Rock Lid: Blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape for a clean, attractive appearance.
- Easy Installation with Included Hardware: Comes with the necessary components for a secure, straightforward setup.
A filter’s role depends on its design and media. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to see whether a model provides mechanical filtration, biological filtration, or both; replacement media also needs to be compatible with that particular filter.
Do you need a skimmer, a filter, or both?
If your pond has few or no fish
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says ponds with few or no fish generally should not require a filter. A skimmer may still be useful if leaves or other floating debris are a problem, depending on the pond’s design.

- EXCLUSIVELY MADE FOR KOI PONDS: Crafted with care, our 1-inch thick filter pads provide exceptional mechanical filtration for crystal-clear water. Plus, they infuse vital oxygen into your ornamental garden pond. Perfect for ponds!
- CRYSTAL CLEAR POND WATER: Place these pads in flowing water (like your pond skimmer box) to trap and remove uneaten food, waste, decaying plants, and other particles. Regular pad changes enhance water quality, preventing organic compounds from breaking down and adding nutrients to your pond.
- CUT TO FIT: Proudly made in the USA, our bulk filter pads are easily customizable. Save money by cutting them to your desired size. Constructed from durable polyester fibers bonded with a special resin, they’re built to last.
- DURABLE AND REUSABLE: Our custom design withstands leaves, twigs, and sticks—no warping or breaking. Rinse clean with a garden hose and reuse them multiple times. Superior filtration for koi ponds and water gardens!
- ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY: Rest assured, our filter media roll is safe for all fish and aquatic life. Dive into cleaner, healthier water today! 🐠🌿🌊
If your pond has fish
Fish produce waste, so filtration is more likely to matter. Choose a filter with the pond’s volume, the number and type of fish, and feeding regime in mind. A surface skimmer can collect floating debris, but it does not automatically replace biological filtration where fish waste needs processing.
If you need both functions
Some pond designs use a skimmer for surface collection and a separate filter for biological treatment. Aquascape describes this combination in its ecosystem pond approach; it is one system design, not evidence that every pond needs both components. A pondless waterfall has no fish and therefore generally needs less biological filtration, according to Aquascape support, though the equipment requirements still depend on the installation.

How to choose equipment for your pond
Start with the problem you are trying to solve, then check the equipment’s rated capacity and installation requirements for your specific setup. Relevant factors include pond volume, fish type and number, feeding, debris load, available space, and pump and plumbing arrangement. Surface area, depth, and sunlight also affect filtration needs. RHS advises following the manufacturer’s recommendations; there is no single capacity formula established for every pond.
- Estimate pond volume. Multiply average length by average width by average depth, using consistent units. If the result is in cubic metres, multiply by 1,000 to convert to litres. For an irregular pond, this is an estimate because it uses average dimensions.
- Assess fish and feeding. Note the fish species and number, and how much you feed. Use this information alongside pond volume when checking filter capacity.
- Identify surface debris. If floating leaves and similar material are the main issue, assess whether a skimmer suits the pond’s layout and pump arrangement.
- Compare the actual models. Check what filtration types a filter provides, its stated capacity for your configuration, its space and plumbing requirements, and how its media is maintained.
Setup and maintenance considerations
Mechanical filtration can begin trapping particles as soon as it is switched on, according to RHS guidance. Biological filtration takes longer to establish: RHS says bacterial populations take six weeks to build up, and may die if the filter is switched off for 24 hours or more. These are general guidance figures, not timing guarantees for every product or setup. Follow the selected manufacturer’s operating instructions.

- UV Filtration - Savio Skimmerfilters are the only skimmers on the market with a patented integrated UV system (sold separately) - a safe, chemical free way to eliminate green water.
- Skimming Action - Pulls debris from the surface of the water, capturing in a rigid leaf basket with handle for clean, no mess disposal
- Biological Filtration - Filter media provides a surface for beneficial bacteria to colonize the skimmerfilter, converting biological waste from fish, ammonia and other toxins to inert forms for healthier ponds.
- Mechanical Filtration - The skimmerfilter protects and extends the life of your pump, providing a place to conceal ugly equipment and plumbing. When used with a biological filtration system, the skimmer prefilters debris allowing your filter to work more efficiently.
Filters need ongoing maintenance. Depending on the model, that may include cleaning or replacing media and replacing UV components. RHS recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying one cleaning schedule to all filters. If electrical supply is required, RHS says installation must be carried out by a qualified electrician.

A UV clarifier is an adjunct, not another name for a skimmer or biological filter. RHS explains that it helps algae clump together so a filter can remove it. It therefore supports algae control by working with filtration; it does not replace surface-debris collection or the biological treatment a fish pond may require.
