For classic movie-theater-style popcorn, coconut popping oil is a well-supported starting point—but there is no single best oil for every machine. The right choice depends on your popper’s instructions and the flavor you want. Check the manual for your exact model before choosing an oil or measuring a batch.

How to choose an oil for your popcorn machine

  1. Check the machine’s manual. Oil compatibility, quantities, and operating steps vary by model. C. Cretors & Company provides manuals by machine family or serial number in its FAQ; the examples below should not be treated as universal instructions.
  2. Choose for the flavor you prefer. Coconut oil is associated with classic movie-theater flavor. Other oils may suit a different taste preference, provided the machine’s instructions allow them.
  3. Measure the amount specified for your popper. Do not transfer a quantity from another machine or kettle size.
  4. Follow the operating and safety directions. In particular, switch off kettle heat as instructed when popping is finished.

Which oils are used for popcorn?

Oil What the cited guidance says Important qualification
Coconut Cretors calls it a classic popcorn oil associated with movie-theater taste. Gold Medal recommends flavored and colored coconut oil for salted popcorn on its Macho Pop 2553/2554 series, and white coconut oil for Glaze Pop. Confirm the oil type and handling instructions for your exact machine.
Canola Listed among oil options by Cretors, Paragon, and Popsmith; Wabash Valley Farms also lists it as a user preference. These are examples from separate manufacturers and products, not a blanket approval for all machines.
Sunflower Listed by Cretors and Paragon; Cretors also names high-oleic sunflower oil. Check the machine manual for compatibility.
Peanut Listed by Cretors and Paragon, and among user preferences in Wabash Valley Farms’ Sweet & Easy instructions. Check the machine manual for compatibility.
Soybean or soy Listed by Cretors and Paragon. Check the machine manual for compatibility.
Corn, avocado, vegetable oil, or blends Cretors lists corn and blended oils; Popsmith names avocado and vegetable oil for stovetop popping. These examples do not establish compatibility with every machine.

When coconut oil is a good starting point

If you want a classic movie-theater-style flavor, coconut popping oil is a reasonable first choice. Cretors describes coconut as a classic popcorn oil, while Gold Medal specifies coconut oil for particular recipes on its Macho Pop 2553/2554 machines. That is useful guidance for those models, not a universal rule. Some coconut oil may need to be liquid before dispensing; Gold Medal’s manual gives that instruction for the cited Macho Pop series.

Can you use canola oil in a popcorn machine?

Canola oil appears in guidance from Cretors, Paragon, Popsmith, and Wabash Valley Farms, so it is a plausible alternative when your machine’s instructions permit it. The sources do not establish that every popper accepts every listed oil. Use the quantity and method in your own machine’s manual rather than substituting instructions from another product.

Why the machine model matters

Gold Medal Macho Pop 2553/2554

For salted popcorn, the manufacturer recommends flavored and colored coconut oil; for Glaze Pop, it recommends white coconut oil. Its table for a 16-ounce kettle specifies 16 ounces of popcorn and 5 ounces of oil. That charge applies to the cited kettle and models only. The manual says to turn off kettle heat when finished and warns: “NEVER LEAVE THE HEAT ON WHEN YOU ARE NOT POPPING CORN!” Follow the full Gold Medal instruction manual.

Paragon 8-ounce popcorn machines

Paragon’s manual says oil affects taste, identifies coconut as the most common oil, and lists canola, sunflower, peanut, and soy as other frequently used options. Those examples are from its 8-ounce-machine guidance; they do not determine what another model can use. See the Paragon 8 oz owner’s manual.

Stovetop poppers

Stovetop instructions can give different quantities from kettle-machine manuals. For its Sweet & Easy Snack Machine, Wabash Valley Farms specifies 1–3 tablespoons of oil for a full batch made with 1/2 cup of kernels, or 1 teaspoon for a partial batch made with 1 tablespoon of kernels. Its instructions say the amount can be reduced to as little as 1 teaspoon and recommend adding most seasonings after popping. These amounts apply to that product; consult its instructions for the full method.

Does one oil make popcorn healthier?

The cited equipment guidance discusses flavor and machine use; it does not establish a health ranking among popcorn oils. Choose based on your machine’s requirements and your taste preference rather than assuming that one of these oils is healthiest.

What to avoid

  • Do not assume a list of popular oils is a compatibility list. Manufacturers describe options for their own machines or use cases.
  • Do not guess the oil quantity. Kettle capacity and recipe determine the amount; the 5-ounce charge above is specific to one 16-ounce Gold Medal kettle.
  • Do not leave kettle heat on when you are not popping. Follow your manual’s shutdown instructions.
  • Do not treat oil choice as a cleaning shortcut. Cretors’ cleaning guidance recommends coconut oil in its own popper-cleaning context, while its FAQ also lists numerous oils for popping. Follow the manual for your machine’s cleaning procedure.
