Yes—plugging too many devices into an outlet, power strip, or the circuit behind them can cause overheating and create a fire or shock hazard. A power strip adds receptacles; it does not increase the electrical capacity of the outlet or circuit. There is no single safe device count for every home: the load depends on what each device draws and the capacity of the wiring and circuit.
How plugging in too many devices creates a hazard
An outlet is connected to wiring and circuit protection with finite capacity. When connected devices demand more than the outlet, cord, strip, or circuit can safely carry, components can overheat. Faulty electrical connections can also present fire and shock risks.
A power strip does not create additional electrical capacity. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) explains that “Power strips only add additional outlets; they do not change the amount of power being received from the outlet.” The number of sockets on a strip is therefore not a measure of how much equipment you can safely run.
There is no universal safe number of devices to plug into one outlet. A low-demand lamp and a high-demand appliance do not place the same load on a circuit. Check appliance labels and product instructions, and ask a qualified electrician about the capacity of a particular circuit rather than relying on a device count.

The broader fire statistics show why electrical safety matters, but they are not specific to overloaded outlets. The U.S. Fire Administration estimated 24,200 residential building electrical fires in 2021, with 295 deaths, 900 injuries, and more than $1.2 billion in property loss; those figures cover electrical fires overall, not just outlet overloads. ESFI reports an NFPA average of 31,647 home fires per year involving electrical distribution or lighting equipment during 2011–2023, with annual averages of 425 deaths, 1,279 injuries, and $1.6 billion in direct property loss. The categories and periods differ, so the estimates should not be treated as interchangeable.
Warning signs that need attention
These symptoms can point to an overloaded circuit or another wiring problem; they are not a home diagnosis. ESFI advises having a qualified electrician inspect electrical problems such as flickering or dimming lights, discolored or warm outlets, buzzing, and a burning smell.

- Breakers trip frequently or fuses blow.
- Lights flicker, blink, or dim when another device turns on.
- An outlet or switch plate feels warm or looks discolored.
- A receptacle buzzes, crackles, or sizzles.
- You notice a burning odor near an outlet or switch.
- An appliance seems underpowered, or someone feels a shock or tingling sensation.
If you notice any of these signs, stop adding load to the affected outlet or circuit and arrange a qualified electrical inspection. Do not open the outlet or attempt repairs based on this article. A breaker that trips repeatedly is a warning, not a reason to keep resetting it without finding out why.
Choose the right solution for the situation
| Option | Appropriate purpose | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Power strip with internal overload protection | Adding receptacles for suitable devices at one existing outlet. | It does not increase outlet or circuit capacity, and overload protection is not permission to exceed that capacity. |
| Extension cord | Temporary reach when a properly rated cord suits the equipment and location. | It is not permanent wiring. Do not overload it, connect cords end to end, route it under rugs, or continue using one that is hot or damaged. |
| Installed outlet or circuit | Addressing persistent demand where a room regularly depends on several strips or extension cords. | Have a qualified electrician assess and install the appropriate solution. |
Safer ways to use outlets, strips, and cords
- Do not overload wall outlets or power strips. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recommends power strips with internal overload protection, but that feature cannot make an overloaded circuit safe.
- Plug major appliances—including refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers—directly into a wall outlet. USFA says not to use extension cords with major appliances because a cord can overheat and start a fire.
- Do not plug one power strip into another or daisy-chain extension cords. ESFI advises that multiple-plug outlets connect directly to a mounted receptacle, not to one another.
- Use extension cords temporarily and choose one rated for the equipment and for indoor or outdoor use as appropriate. Keep cords out from under rugs and away from places where they may be pinched. Replace worn, old, damaged, or hot cords.
- Insert plugs fully. Do not force a three-prong plug into a two-slot outlet, and have an outlet replaced if it no longer holds plugs snugly.
- If you routinely need several strips or extension cords in a room, reduce the connected load and ask a qualified electrician whether additional, correctly placed outlets or a new circuit are appropriate.
When to call an electrician
Arrange an inspection if breakers trip frequently, lights flicker or dim, an outlet or plate is warm or discolored, a receptacle makes unusual noises, or you notice a burning odor, underpowered appliance, shock, or tingling. Also seek advice when ordinary use regularly leaves you relying on multiple strips or extension cords. A qualified electrician can assess whether the issue is the connected load, the outlet, the circuit, or another wiring fault, and advise on installed outlets or circuits. Do not try to diagnose or repair wiring by opening an outlet.

Check whether a recalled power strip is involved
On March 26, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of certain CCCEI power strips with 6-, 10-, or 15-foot cords. CPSC said the products lacked supplementary overcurrent protection, posing a fire risk if overloaded. About 5,543 units were involved, and the recall offered a refund. This is a defect affecting those recalled products, not evidence that all power strips share the same problem. If you own a potentially affected strip, use the CPSC recall notice to identify the product and check the remedy.
