It can be shaped by hand or pressed into a form, but it is a recipe—not a verified equivalent to Sugru. For a first try, make a small batch, follow the caulk manufacturer’s safety instructions, and test the mixture on a noncritical project.
What Oogoo is—and what it can do
Oogoo combines silicone caulk and cornstarch to make a material that can be molded by hand or cast in a form. WIRED quoted Oogoo inventor Michael Anthony describing it this way: “It can be used to make most of the things you can make with Sugru.” That is his description of the idea, not evidence that Oogoo matches Sugru’s adhesion, strength, durability, or safety for a particular use. (WIRED; Instructables)
Once cured, Oogoo can be sanded and cut with a knife, although the WIRED instructions caution that precise knife cuts are difficult. Treat it as a craft or prototyping material unless the exact caulk and resulting piece have been established as suitable for a more demanding purpose.
What you need
- 100% silicone caulk. The original tutorial specifies 100% clear silicone caulk; formulations differ, so check the specific product label.
- 100% cornstarch.
- A caulking gun if the caulk comes in a cartridge.
- A disposable cup or other container and a mixing stick, such as a lollipop stick.
- Nitrile gloves and a well-ventilated workspace. The product label and current safety data sheet take precedence over general recipe advice.
WIRED’s materials list also mentions linseed-oil-based paint for coloring. It describes adding five drops per teaspoon of mixture, but that is a reported recipe instruction, not a guarantee that the paint is compatible with every caulk. (WIRED; Instructables)

If it's little sticky, please extend the curing time of silicone rubber
- GREAT FOR BEGINNER: If you're new to the mold making, this mold making kit is a perfect choice for you to try! No special skills or tools are needed. You could enjoy this fun and creative activity all day. HOW to CLEAN: If there's any spill, please clean with soapy water or rubbing alcohol.
- FAST CURE &100% REDUCTION: 4 hours fast cure, 15A hardness, so that the finished mold produced has good flexibility and elasticity, not easy to tear. It can capture complex details well and release mold easily.
How to mix a small batch
- Read the caulk label and safety data sheet. Uncured caulk can give off fumes. WIRED recommends gloves and good ventilation; a University of Akron classroom handout measures silicone-1 caulk in a fume hood. Use the precautions specified for your product. (WIRED; University of Akron Polymer Outreach)
- Dispense only a small amount of caulk. WIRED suggests starting with around three or four tablespoons. This is a practical recipe suggestion, not a standardized batch size.
- Add cornstarch and mix. WIRED reports a cornstarch-to-silicone ratio of 1:1 for a quicker set, or 1:3 for a slower set over a few hours. These are reported recipe ratios rather than guaranteed working or curing times. Mix in small quantities and be prepared to adjust your approach for the particular caulk and conditions.
- Shape or cast the mixture. Work it by hand or press it into a form while it is workable. Avoid skin contact with uncured caulk and keep the workspace ventilated.
- Allow it to cure before handling as a finished part. Do not assume a fixed cure time from the ratios alone. Temperature, humidity, thickness, and mixing can affect the result. (Instructables)
Why timing and results vary
The quicker- and slower-set ratios above are guidance from WIRED’s 2015 recipe, not product specifications. The original tutorial identifies temperature, humidity, thickness, and mixing as factors affecting cure time. It also reports that the particular vinegar-smelling caulk used in that tutorial worked and that a named newer formulation did not. That old, recipe-specific observation does not establish how currently sold caulks compare or which will work best.
The original tutorial proposes an explanation for why cornstarch accelerates curing, but Make: expressed uncertainty about that explanation. The practical takeaway is to judge the result by the specific mixture and caulk rather than relying on a presumed chemical mechanism. (Make:)

Uses to avoid without product-specific evidence
- Food contact: The cited instructions do not establish Oogoo as food-safe.
- Prolonged skin contact: The sources do not establish it as skin-safe. Handling uncured caulk also requires attention to the manufacturer’s warnings.
- Safety-critical repairs: The available sources provide no validated performance testing for structural, electrical, plumbing, or other safety-critical repairs. Do not rely on a homemade batch for a repair where failure could cause injury or damage.
