Verdict: NatureMill’s ECO-series NEO, METRO, and ULTRA are described in the manufacturer’s 2011 manual as household composters that mix and aerate scraps, but they require regular balancing inputs and hands-on management. The manual gives useful instructions for feeding and transferring material; it does not establish current availability, price, warranty, or independently tested performance.
What the NatureMill composter does
The NatureMill ECO-series manual covers the NEO, METRO, and ULTRA. It describes an electrically powered mixing chamber that periodically mixes and aerates food scraps, with a lower tray where material continues to compost. The manual presents these models for indoor or outdoor household use and describes power settings that alter mixing, airflow, and temperature. These are manufacturer instructions in a 2011 manual, not results from an independent test. Read the NatureMill ECO Series Automatic Composter Manual (2011).
How much effort and extra material does it take?
NatureMill’s manual calls for balancing each addition of food with sawdust pellets and baking soda. Its stated ratio is one cup (250 ml) of sawdust pellets and one tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda per five to ten cups (1.3–2.5 L) of food scraps. The sawdust supplies “brown” material; the baking soda is intended to balance acidity. Wet foods—including lettuce, peaches, tomatoes, melon, and watermelon—may need extra pellets.
That recurring input is a practical consideration: this is not simply a sealed bin into which all kitchen scraps can be tossed. The manual specifies sawdust pellets, but does not endorse every product sold as wood pellets.

What can you put in a NatureMill composter?
The ECO manual says meat, chicken, fish, eggs, and dairy may be added, with extra pellets. It advises cutting food into pieces four inches (10 cm) or smaller and adding it gradually. Overloading can prevent transfer or jam the chamber; the manual states, “Do not overload the mixing chamber or it will jam or fail to transfer.”
Foods that can create odor or handling problems
- Brassicas: Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, and related vegetables can produce strong odors, according to the manual.
- Acidic fruit: Limit citrus and pineapple to two or three small pieces per load, or add extra baking soda.
- Hard or fibrous items: Pits, bones, corn cobs, husks, and tough stems may not break down and can contribute to repeated jams.
- Paper and liquids: The manual cautions against adding them.
Does the NatureMill composter smell?
The manual does not provide independent odor measurements or establish that the unit is odor-free. It identifies certain feeding conditions that may cause problems: brassicas can produce strong odors, while wet or acidic loads may need adjustment with extra sawdust pellets or baking soda. It recommends HIGH power when odor or wetness is a problem. These are the manufacturer’s operating suggestions, not a guarantee that odors will be prevented.

How long does NatureMill compost take?
The ECO manual says food may begin to look compost-like within days. It advises transferring material to the lower tray when it looks like soil, usually every one to three weeks. This is a visual cue and manufacturer guidance, not a measured guarantee that finished, cured compost will be ready on that schedule. Material continues composting in the lower tray, which the manual recommends leaving in place as long as possible to cure and dry.
For first use, the manual instructs owners to fill the mixing chamber only halfway during the first week, use HIGH power, and keep the unit plugged in. It also advises transferring material before the chamber is completely full.

Which power setting should you use?
- HIGH: Startup, large quantities, tough or wet foods, and odor or wetness problems.
- MEDIUM: Ordinary household use.
- LOW: Small quantities, vacations, dry compost, or when lower noise, energy use, and wear are priorities.
If a jam indicator appears, the manual recommends waiting 24 hours to allow automatic clearing before removing material.
What happens to the compost after it leaves the chamber?
The lower tray is part of the process, not just a collection drawer: the manual says material continues to compost there and recommends leaving it to cure and dry. It describes fresh compost as suitable for outdoor use. For indoor use, it instructs owners to cure and dry the material outdoors for several days or weeks first. The manual also recommends applying fresh compost at the soil surface, away from sensitive roots; it does not provide evidence for broader claims about nutrient content or suitability for particular plants.

Where can you place the unit, and what maintenance does it need?
- Protect unsealed flooring because occasional liquid drips are possible.
- Leave at least one inch of clearance behind the unit.
- For outdoor placement, protect the power supply from weather.
- Expect the mixing chamber to become hot; wash hands after handling compost.
- Do not clean the chamber with soap, sprays, or chemicals.
Model-specific maintenance instructions should not be mixed. The ECO manual says its inaccessible filter should last a lifetime. A separate archive summary for the NM5125 model says full curing takes four to six months and calls for replacing its air filter every one to two years. Those NM5125 details do not establish the schedule for NEO, METRO, or ULTRA. See the ManualsLib NM5125 manual page.
Is it a good choice?
The manual suggests NatureMill may suit a household prepared to measure recurring balancing materials, feed scraps selectively, respond to odor or moisture issues, and let material continue curing in a lower tray. It is a less straightforward fit for someone expecting to add any scraps without adjustment or wanting a documented finished-compost timeline. The available documentation does not support ranking it against other composters or making claims about current stock, price, warranty, owner satisfaction, or independent performance. A retailer page exists, but it does not verify those points. View the People Powered Machines PRO XE listing.
