A section of feature-lighting casing fell from Perth’s Boorloo Bridge shortly before 5pm on November 17, 2025. The West Australian reported that it came close to hitting a woman cycling on the shared path. Main Roads WA closed the bridge after the incident; it reopened two days later, after the lighting casings were reinforced.
What happened on Boorloo Bridge?
Boorloo Bridge is the pedestrian and cyclist bridge connecting Victoria Park to Perth, part of the Causeway pedestrian and cyclist bridge project. The incident involved a section of the bridge’s feature-lighting casing—not a bicycle light.
The West Australian’s report said the falling strip nearly hit a woman riding on the shared path. The newspaper’s account is the source for the near-hit detail; the public records do not provide a first-person account from the cyclist.
Why was the bridge closed, and when did it reopen?
Main Roads closed the footbridge following the fall, according to the newspaper and the WA Legislative Council’s subsequent responses. On November 18, Parliamentary Secretary representing the Minister for Transport Hon Samantha Rowe said the cause was still being investigated. She also said police had advised Main Roads that the cyclist involved did not wish to provide details or be contacted.

The bridge reopened on November 19, 2025. In a December 2 response to the Legislative Council, Rowe said: “Boorloo Bridge reopened on 19 November, with all lighting casings having been reinforced. There are no structural issues with the bridge.” The response did not state what caused the casing to fall or publish an investigation finding. Reinforcement and the statement about structural condition do not establish a particular failure mechanism.
Is Boorloo Bridge open now?
As of October 8, 2026, Main Roads WA lists a separate, staged maintenance and repair program for the bridge’s feature-lighting system, scheduled from September 22 to November 6, 2026. This is later planned work, not evidence that the 2025 incident closure resumed.

According to the Main Roads project page, the work proceeds one bridge at a time. The bridge section being worked on is subject to temporary full closures for 24 hours; work is scheduled at night where possible. Detours are via the footpath on the Causeway Traffic Bridge and Heirisson Island. For context only, a Centre for Automotive Safety Research survey of 321 cyclists in the ACT found that 219 participants (68.2%) reported experiencing a near miss. Among those 219, 159 (72.5%) said their most recent significant near miss occurred on a regular cycling route. These are ACT survey findings, not estimates for Perth, and they do not measure incidents involving falling infrastructure.
