The terms overlap in everyday conversation because “modern” can also simply mean current. For architecture and construction, the distinction is useful—but neither label describes one fixed look.
What “modern” means in design history
Modernism was not a single style with one universal start and end date. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes it as “a loose collection of ideas” spanning art, architecture, design and literature. It was prominent between the World Wars and reflected ambitions to rethink society and the designed world. The V&A’s overview of Modernism was last updated on 17 April 2024.
In buildings and objects, Modernist work often reduced applied ornament and favored clean lines and visual simplicity. The Royal Institute of British Architects likewise describes architectural Modernism as rejecting ornament and embracing minimalism. These are tendencies, not a checklist: Modernism cannot be reduced to minimalism alone, and individual works vary.
A date range depends on place and field
There is no single date range that applies to all Modernist design. In a specifically British architectural context, RIBA says “Modern Movement” has been used for rigorous modernist design from the 1930s to the early 1960s. That framing should not be extended to every country or discipline. RIBA’s guide to the Modernism movement provides that architecture-specific account.

What “contemporary” means
Contemporary generally means belonging to the present period. Unlike Modernism, it is not a stable historical movement with a settled visual vocabulary: what counts as contemporary changes as the present changes. A contemporary building might be restrained or expressive, traditional in appearance or experimental; the label alone does not tell you its style.
Contemporary design responds to the materials, technologies, production methods and concerns of its time. In a 2018 essay, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Curatorial Director Cara McCarty identified digital technologies, customization, environmental concerns and well-being as four trends and challenges of that era. Modern vs. contemporary design at a glance

How to tell what a design label means
When you encounter “modern” or “contemporary” in a building description, first determine how the writer is using the word. The label may refer to a historical movement, or it may be a loose way of saying current. Then consider the work’s context rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Check the intended meaning. Does “modern” point to Modernism, or simply mean up to date?
- Look at the date, place and field. A building’s architectural context may differ from the history of furniture or product design; a British architectural period label is not automatically universal.
- Consider form and aims. Notice how the design treats function, ornament, line and simplicity, but treat these as clues rather than requirements.
- Ask what shaped the work. Materials, technologies, production processes and the concerns of its time can help explain a contemporary design.
Can a design be both modern and contemporary?
Yes, depending on the meaning of “modern.” A current project may draw on Modernist ideas, so it can be contemporary by date and modernist by influence. In casual speech, someone may also call current work “modern” without making a historical claim. The surrounding description—and whether it names a movement, period or design influence—helps clarify the intended meaning.

Institutional labels can add another layer. MoMA’s Architecture and Design department describes a collection spanning major movements from the mid-19th century to the present; that collection scope is not the same as everyday use of “contemporary.” MoMA explains its Architecture and Design department here.
