Is Miami Beach Replacing Palm Trees? What the City’s Shade-Tree Plan Actually Says

Miami Beach’s 2026 shade campaign aims to add appropriately sited trees, not remove palms citywide. Here’s what the city named and what property owners should know about permits and planting sites.

Miami Beach has not announced a blanket plan to remove its palm trees. Its January 12, 2026 initiative, “Let Us Throw You Some Shade,” is a campaign to add trees that expand shade and the urban canopy. Palms may still be removed or relocated in individual cases, but the city’s announcement focuses on finding suitable places for new trees—not swapping out palms citywide.

Is Miami Beach removing palm trees?

The city’s announcement describes a resident- and business-driven effort to identify locations for new trees. It does not say that palms across Miami Beach will be removed or replaced. The city said it expected to give away hundreds of native and Florida-friendly trees, with the aim of improving shade and walkability.

The Urban Forestry Master Plan goal cited in that January 12, 2026 announcement is to increase canopy coverage from 17% to 22%. The campaign’s application window ran from January 12 through March 31, 2026, with planting scheduled for summer to early fall 2026; those dates are historical, not an indication that applications are open now. City of Miami Beach: campaign announcement

What trees did Miami Beach name as possible additions?

The city listed these possible campaign trees:

  • Bulnesia, also called verawood
  • Crape myrtle
  • Dahoon holly
  • Green buttonwood
  • Gumbo limbo
  • Live oak
  • Pigeon plum
  • Powderpuff
  • Silver buttonwood
  • Simpson stopper
  • Spanish stopper
  • Wild tamarind

This is a set of possibilities, not a universal replacement list or a species-by-species performance ranking. The city’s “Right Tree Right Place” approach considers the space available and potential conflicts as trees mature. Its announcement does not compare candidates for shade, salt tolerance, maintenance needs, or survival rates.

How does the city choose where a new tree can go?

Residents and businesses were invited to suggest locations, but city staff review each proposed site for underground infrastructure, overhead utilities, travel lanes, bicycle lanes, and parking. Limited growing space, along with rising groundwater and saltwater, also makes long-term canopy growth a challenge in Miami Beach.

For a property owner or project team, the practical takeaway is to assess the specific site rather than assume one tree will suit every yard, street edge, or construction project. A candidate must fit both the intended use—such as providing shade—and the physical space and surrounding infrastructure. The city’s campaign announcement explains the location review and planting approach at the campaign page.

Do you need a permit to remove or relocate a palm tree?

Generally, yes. Miami Beach says an approved tree-work permit is required to remove or relocate a tree or palm within city boundaries, subject to a few exceptions. Check the city’s current requirements before scheduling work; do not assume a palm is exempt because the city is adding shade trees.

Common application materials identified by the city include a tree survey, tree disposition, and arborist report. Landscape plans may also be required when canopy mitigation applies. A tree disposition documents each tree’s identity, dimensions, health assessment, location, and whether it is to be retained, removed, or relocated. The city outlines permitting requirements in its environmental permitting FAQ.

What happens after a campaign tree is planted?

For trees provided through the campaign, the city said it would install and maintain each tree for the first three months and provide a one-year warranty. After that initial period, residents or businesses would take responsibility for regular watering, pruning, and keeping the tree clear of obstructions. These terms describe the campaign announced in January 2026; confirm current program details with the city before relying on them for a new application.

Are dune plants the same as street or yard shade trees?

No. Dune vegetation has a distinct coastal-protection role. Miami Beach says native, salt-tolerant dune plants trap windblown sand, stabilize dunes, limit erosion, absorb wave energy, and help protect coastal infrastructure. The city also removes aggressive non-native vegetation that threatens dune stability and biodiversity. Those dune-management decisions should not be treated as a list of ordinary shade-tree replacements. See the city’s natural-resources management information.
