Mettams Pool’s replacement water-access ramp was completed and announced by the City of Stirling on 11 July 2024. It leads directly into the water and has a continuous handrail. PerthNow reported Mayor Mark Irwin’s description of a continuous path from accessible parking on West Coast Drive to the water, but the available information does not include technical specifications or an independent accessibility assessment.
What the replacement ramp provides
The City of Stirling said the ramp offers an alternative route into the water, including when the rocky barrier is fully exposed. Its continuous handrail runs along the access ramp, and its deck is made from lattice mesh of composite fibre reinforced plastic. The City described the surface as non-slip and relatively self-cleaning, and said it improves on the previous solid-concrete ramp. Those descriptions are not a guarantee against slipping or a claim about the material’s lifetime performance. City of Stirling, 11 July 2024
PerthNow quoted Mayor Mark Irwin describing a “continuous path from accessible parking on West Coast Drive via an access ramp to the beach and directly into the water.” That is the mayor’s account of the route, not a published independent accessibility audit. The sources reviewed do not state the ramp’s gradient or dimensions, report user testing, or identify universal-access certification. PerthNow, 28 July 2024
Why the ramp was replaced
The replacement followed the removal in 2021 of the former ramp, which had deteriorated. That structure dated to 1980. The City’s announcement describes a replacement that reaches directly into the water; it does not provide a quantified performance comparison between the old and new structures. What to check before visiting
The completion announcement documents the project in 2024; it does not establish present-day maintenance, parking availability, beach conditions or access at a particular tide. It also does not say whether a beach wheelchair is available to borrow or hire. Check current information from the City of Stirling or the park authority before travelling, and consider the day’s conditions and your own access needs. The published details support the ramp’s intended access improvements, but do not establish that every person, wheelchair or set of conditions can use it independently.
Mayor Irwin called Mettams Pool “uniquely important with its inshore reef and pool, as the primary safe bathing area along the Stirling coastline,” according to the City announcement. Member for Scarborough Stuart Aubrey said the CoastWA Program prioritises investments in planning and projects to help coastal managers protect and enhance the coastline. These are attributed statements about the site and program, not technical findings about ramp performance.
