To stop water to a Samsung refrigerator, turn off the ice maker, then close the valve supplying the refrigerator. Samsung says the valve may be behind the fridge or under the sink. If you are disconnecting the line, have towels and a bowl ready for water left inside it; check your model’s manual because controls and plumbing connections vary.
Steps to shut off the refrigerator’s water supply
- Turn off the ice maker. Samsung lists this as the first step when preparing a refrigerator for a move. Use the control specified in your model’s manual; control labels and locations vary. Samsung’s moving and setup guidance gives the sequence.
- Locate the refrigerator’s supply valve. Look behind the refrigerator and under the sink, the two locations Samsung identifies. If you do not find it, trace the refrigerator’s water line if accessible. Homes and installations differ.
- Close the valve serving the refrigerator. Samsung does not give one universal handle direction or design, so operate the valve according to its markings or instructions rather than assuming every valve turns the same way. If you cannot identify it or it is difficult to operate, stop and consult the model manual or a qualified technician.
- Prepare for residual water if you are disconnecting the line. Put towels and a bowl beneath the connection before loosening it. Samsung describes releasing plastic tubing at its connector and unscrewing copper tubing from a compression fitting. Follow the instructions for your model and connection type.
Which valve should you turn off?
For routine refrigerator work, such as moving the appliance or disconnecting its existing line, the relevant control is the refrigerator’s supply valve—not necessarily the home’s main shutoff. Samsung says the refrigerator valve may be behind the appliance or under the sink. By contrast, Samsung Caribbean’s instructions for installing a water line call for shutting off the main water valve before that installation. These are different tasks; do not shut off the entire home supply unless the work or a qualified professional requires it.
Changing the water filter is a separate procedure
Samsung Canada advises shutting off the supply and dispensing water until the flow stops to relieve pressure before removing a filter. Filter location and cartridge type vary, so check the refrigerator’s model number or the marking on the existing cartridge before choosing a replacement. The Canadian guide names HAF-CIN, HAF-QIN, and HAFCU1 cartridges for Canadian refrigerators; that is not a complete compatibility list for all models or markets. After replacement, that same Canadian guide says to restore the supply and dispense water for about seven minutes (10–12 large glasses), then discard it. Use the reset instructions for your model, since the reset procedure varies. These are filter-replacement directions, not a general requirement for simply turning off the water.

If you are installing or reconnecting a water line
Installing a line is different from closing an existing valve. Samsung’s US installation guide says a new water line may be needed if no line is present. Its suggested kit uses 1/4-inch copper tubing, a 1/4-inch compression nut, and a ferrule; overtightening can cause leaks. Samsung states that the ice-maker installation it describes requires at least 30 psi of water pressure. These are installation specifications, not steps needed for a routine shutoff. For the first use after installation, Samsung’s US guide says to dispense one gallon of water and discard the first two buckets of ice. Those directions apply to the setup described in that guide; follow your model’s manual for its instructions. Samsung Caribbean advises using the new hoses supplied with the appliance and having water-line installation performed by a qualified technician. When to get help
- You cannot locate or confidently identify the refrigerator’s supply valve.
- The valve is inaccessible, stuck, or begins leaking when operated.
- A water connection leaks after disconnection or reconnection.
- You are unsure how your model’s tubing or connector releases.
Use the manual for your exact model for control and connection details. Samsung’s support guidance says configurations and instructions can vary; for installation or a leak you cannot safely resolve, contact a qualified technician or the water-line installer.
