The practical test is whether your layout can fit a separate, safe infant sleep space, preserve clear routes through the home, and give both adults enough rest and room for daily life. If those conditions hold, staying may be a reasonable choice; if they do not, more square footage may be worth the cost.
Start with the baby’s sleep space
Plan around a fixed place for the baby to sleep before buying furniture or baby gear. The CDC advises placing babies on their backs for every sleep, on a firm, flat surface such as a safety-approved crib, with soft bedding kept out of the sleep space. It recommends room-sharing—having the baby sleep in the parents’ room, but on a separate surface—ideally until at least 6 months. The CDC says room-sharing may decrease the risk of SIDS by as much as 50%; that is its cited estimate, not a guarantee for an individual family. CDC safe-sleep guidance.
The American Academy of Pediatrics lists a crib, bassinet, portable crib, or play yard that meets applicable safety standards as possible infant sleep spaces. Check the specific product’s current safety status and dimensions, and use a mattress designed for that crib with a fitted sheet only. A portable option may be worth measuring for your layout, but its name does not guarantee that it is safe for every use or that it will fit. AAP safe-sleep guidance.
Room-sharing is not bed-sharing. If you bring the baby into bed to feed or comfort them, return them to their own sleep space before you go to sleep, as the AAP advises.

Test the floor plan as you will actually use it
Measure the sleep surface and the furniture you already need, then mark their footprints on a floor plan or with tape on the floor. Include doors, drawers, and the space needed to get in and out of bed. Walk the routes you use most: bedroom to bathroom, kitchen, and exit. They should remain clear without having to shift furniture, especially when carrying the baby.
Keep frequently used supplies accessible, but do not let storage crowd the sleep area or block a path. Avoid buying bulky baby gear until you know where it will go and have checked its measurements. The AAP notes that every home is different and that no checklist suits every household; your actual layout and routines matter.

Decide whether staying works for both adults
Square footage cannot tell you whether the arrangement will feel sustainable. Talk through your work and caregiving schedules, night waking, where each person can rest, and how much privacy you need. A setup that works during the newborn stage may need to change as the baby grows and becomes more mobile, so agree on a time to reassess and on the problems that would prompt an earlier review.

If you are deciding whether to stay or move, compare the current home with specific alternatives rather than with an abstract idea of “more space.” Include the cost of improving the setup and the full cost of moving—housing payments, fees, commute, childcare, and disruption. These are household trade-offs, not matters that a square-footage rule can settle.

- Staying looks workable if you can keep a separate, safe sleep surface in the parents’ room, preserve clear daily routes, store essentials safely, and both adults can manage the routine.
- Reconsider the layout or home if the sleep surface cannot be placed safely, paths remain obstructed, or the arrangement repeatedly prevents either adult from resting or functioning.
Neither the CDC nor the AAP establishes 615 square feet as a universal minimum or maximum for a couple and baby. The answer depends on the floor plan, the household’s needs, and whether the home remains safe and workable as those needs change.
