Can You Remove Burn Marks From a Router? What to Do Safely

A dark mark on a router may not be removable dirt. Unplug it, inspect the enclosure, and follow model-specific cleaning and repair guidance.

A dark mark on a router may be surface dirt, discoloration, melted plastic, or other damage; its appearance alone cannot identify the cause. Don’t try to erase a suspected burn mark with solvents, abrasives, or heat. Unplug the router, inspect the enclosure, and follow the care and safety instructions for its exact model.

How to assess the mark safely

  1. Unplug the router. Google gives this direction for Nest Wifi before cleaning; check the manual for your own model.
  2. Inspect the enclosure without opening it. Look for melting, cracks, deformation, or other visible damage. A mark by itself does not establish that the router has an electrical fault.
  3. Stop using a damaged or concerning device. If the case is damaged, the router is unusually hot, smells burnt, or shows signs of electrical damage, leave it unplugged and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Don’t open the case or attempt an internal repair.

Google’s Nest Wifi safety guide says, “Do not use a device with a damaged enclosure,” and directs repairs to Google. That advice is specific to Nest Wifi; consult the instructions for your router’s make and model. ASUS also lists examples of customer-induced damage for wireless routers and directs users to authorized service, while noting that its examples are not exhaustive: ASUS guidance on customer-induced damage.

What cleaning is safe?

For Nest Wifi

Google recommends cleaning Nest Wifi with a clean, soft, dry cloth and warns against chemical agents such as alcohol or benzene. If a mark remains, don’t escalate to a stronger cleaner: treat it as possible material damage and contact Google if the enclosure may be damaged. See Google’s Nest Wifi safety and regulatory guide.

For other router models

Use only the cleaning instructions for the exact model. The Nest Wifi guidance does not establish which products are safe for other router plastics. In the absence of model-specific permission, avoid solvents, abrasive pads, scrapers, and heat; these can worsen a mark or damage the enclosure.

When to stop using the router and get help

  • The enclosure looks melted, cracked, or deformed.
  • The router has an unusual burnt smell or is unusually hot.
  • You see signs of electrical damage.

Unplug the router and contact its manufacturer or an authorized service provider if any of these apply. Normal warmth alone does not prove a fault: Google notes that Nest Wifi generates heat during normal operation. But that does not override its warning against using a device with a damaged enclosure.

Reduce exposure to heat

TP-Link Japan’s guidance recommends placing a router where air can circulate, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and using the supplied power adapter. This is that manufacturer’s placement advice, not a diagnosis of an existing mark or a universal instruction for every router. See TP-Link Japan’s router heat guidance.

Should you replace the router?

A superficial mark alone does not show that replacement is necessary. If the enclosure is damaged, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider whether the router can be serviced or should be replaced; Google advises against using a Nest Wifi device with a damaged enclosure and says repairs should be performed by Google. If replacement is recommended, check compatibility with your internet service and existing network, the manufacturer’s support and warranty terms, and the features your household needs.
