Make Volume 12’s espresso tamper project is John Edgar Park’s Hydraulic Espresso Tamper, first published on page 125. It adapts a manual juicer into a lever platform and uses a hydraulic piston and pressure gauge to make tamping force visible. The project is a custom metalworking build, not a ready-to-assemble kit.

How the hydraulic tamper works
Park’s design adapts a manual lever juicer as the frame. Its down-shaft operates a hydraulic piston connected to a pressure gauge, while a commercial espresso tamper base sits at the piston end. The gauge lets the builder observe the pressure as the tamper is pressed against the coffee.
The project’s stated aim is to make tamping pressure easier to see and repeat. Park frames about 30 pounds of pressure as his target; that is the author’s design rationale, not a universal espresso rule or independently verified brewing standard.

What to know before building it
- Plan for custom fabrication. The shaped support plate and shaft-to-piston coupling call for metalworking and fitting adjustments; this is not simply a matter of connecting standard parts.
- Check compatibility before sourcing. The tamper base may need a threaded insert or another adaptation, and piston, gauge, and fitting connections must suit the chosen parts.
- Treat specifications as historical project details. Park reports sourcing a 100psi gauge. That is a specification from the 2012 project page, not a current recommendation for every build.
- Do not rely on old cost or vendor details as current quotes. The page estimated $60–$100 depending on sourcing and says Park’s completed device cost about $50. Those are historical figures from the project, not present-day prices.
What the project does—and does not—establish
The design offers a way to observe and aim for repeatable tamping pressure using a lever, hydraulic piston, and gauge. Park also mentions commercial automated tampers as an example of consistent pressure, but the project page does not provide comparative testing showing that this DIY build performs better than a commercial tamper or another design. Its useful contribution is a build concept for readers prepared to fabricate and adapt parts.
