A lush backyard starts with plants suited to the light and moisture you actually have—not a one-size-fits-all shade list. Map sunny and shaded areas, check whether shade comes from a building or tree canopy, and note where soil stays moist or dries quickly. Then layer foliage from taller structure down to shrubs and ground-level plants for a woodland feel.
Start with the conditions in your backyard
Before choosing plants, observe the garden at different times of day. A spot shaded by a building may have different conditions from one beneath a tree, where roots also compete for water. Deep shade narrows the range of suitable plants, while dry shade beneath trees can rule out moisture-loving choices. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends matching plants to the degree and cause of shade rather than treating all shaded ground alike.
- Light: Note full sun, partial shade, or deeper shade, and what casts it.
- Moisture and drainage: Check whether the soil remains moist, drains freely, or dries out under trees.
- Space: Compare the bed’s dimensions with each plant’s mature height and spread.
- Exposure: Account for wind, especially for plants that prefer sheltered conditions.
For practical shade-garden guidance, see the RHS guide to shade gardening.
Build a layered, foliage-led planting scheme
A woodland-inspired garden gains depth by using plants at different heights rather than relying on a single mass of one kind. The RHS describes this layered approach as a way to bring a forest feeling into a garden. Use taller plants or evergreen structure behind lower shrubs and foliage plants, then fill the front of a border with smaller forms suited to the same conditions.

Leave lighter pockets where plants need more sun. Evergreen plants can contribute year-round color and structure, but they may cast substantial shade and restrict what can grow beneath them. The RHS discusses combining evergreen forms for seasonal interest in its guide to evergreen foliage.

Hostas for bold foliage in moist shade
Hostas bring broad, attention-grabbing leaves in greens, blue-gray tones, yellow-green shades, and cream or gold variegation. Leaf shape and texture vary, so they can serve as a focal point or contrast with finer foliage. Most grow best in moist soil and light to medium shade. Blue-leaved forms generally favor light shade, while yellow-leaved cultivars usually benefit from some sun.

Hostas are not a reliable default for dry soil or exposed, windy locations, and slugs and snails are a common drawback. Plant in spring or autumn where possible; planting at other times can work if you avoid mid-summer heat and dry soil. Space plants according to their mature size—the RHS gives up to 90 cm (3 ft), depending on height and spread. Water new plants regularly, especially through their first summer, and mulch to help conserve moisture. The RHS has further advice in its hosta growing guide.
Ferns for fine texture in shade
Athyrium ferns have finely divided, arching fronds that contrast well with hostas and other bold-leaved plants. They suit full or partial shade and prefer rich, moisture-retentive soil, making them a better fit for a damp shady bed than a dry spot beneath thirsty tree roots. The RHS recommends planting in spring or autumn; see its Athyrium growing guide.

Ornamental grasses for movement and structure
Grasses range from low ground-covering forms to large features, with foliage that may stand upright or arch and seedheads that add another layer of texture. Most prefer an open, sunny position with light, moist but free-draining, moderately fertile soil. Some suit other settings, so check the specific plant label rather than assuming all grasses tolerate shade.
Water newly planted grasses regularly through their first summer. Established in-ground plants are often fairly drought tolerant, while container-grown grasses need more frequent watering. The RHS explains the range of forms and growing conditions in its ornamental-grass guide.

What grows beneath trees in dry shade?
Dry shade is a distinct challenge: tree roots compete for moisture, so plants that prefer rich, consistently moist soil may struggle even if they tolerate shade. Hostas and moisture-loving Athyrium ferns are therefore poor choices for dry ground unless you can reliably improve and maintain soil moisture. First identify whether the area is genuinely dry, then choose plants whose labels match both its light and moisture conditions. The RHS explains the differences among shade conditions in its shade-gardening guidance.
Make damp shade feel full and layered
If a shaded bed stays damp, it can support a broader mix than a dry, root-filled patch. Ferns can supply the foliage and fine texture, while flowering plants suited to damp shade add seasonal color. Keep plant selections specific to damp conditions; a combination intended for moist shade should not be transferred unchanged to dry shade. The RHS offers examples in plants for damp shade with fronds and blooms.
Keep the planting attractive as it establishes
Care should follow the plant’s needs and the way it is grown. Hostas in borders need regular watering while establishing, particularly during their first summer, and mulch helps conserve moisture. For containers, use a pot with drainage holes; the RHS recommends a diameter of 30–45 cm for hostas and peat-free multipurpose or loam-based compost. Miniature cultivars can suit smaller pots. Container plants generally need closer attention to watering than established plants in the ground.
When planning any new planting, use mature size to set spacing and keep access for watering and seasonal cleanup. A plant that fits its conditions and has room to reach its intended size is more likely to create the full, layered effect you want than one chosen for foliage alone. For a broader woodland-garden perspective, see the RHS article on creating a forest bathing garden.
