Start by finding the washer’s complete model number: “110” alone does not identify a specific Kenmore washer, its manual, its error-code system, or compatible parts. Then check the simple causes—lid closure, load balance, and drain-hose restrictions—before considering a repair. The steps below distinguish general first checks from guidance documented for particular models and washer families.
Find the complete model number first
Kenmore’s manual lookup asks for the complete model number and notes that model numbers are at least 11 characters long; enter it without special characters. Check the appliance’s label, then use that full number to find the matching manual. A 110 prefix is not enough to identify the washer or choose a replacement part.
That distinction matters because the code guidance below is for Kenmore 110 VMW top-load washers, while the cited owner’s manual is for model 110.27042602. Neither should be treated as universal instructions for every Kenmore washer beginning with 110. Follow the manual for your exact model, especially for diagnostic button sequences, light patterns, installation measurements, and repair steps.
Quick checks before troubleshooting further
- Close the lid fully. The owner’s manual for model 110.27042602 says, “The lid must be closed during operation. The washer will not operate with the lid open.” Check the matching manual for your washer’s operation and lid-lock behavior.
- Check load size and distribution. Avoid overloading, and redistribute laundry that has bunched to one side. The cited manual says a large unbalanced load can reduce spin speed and leave clothes wet.
- Check that the washer is level. The cited manual calls for the washer to be level, with its feet firmly contacting the floor. Use the instructions for your model when adjusting it.
- If water remains, inspect the drain path. Look for a kinked, clogged, or restricted drain hose. Do not pull the washer apart or assume the pump has failed based only on water remaining in the tub.
- Use only model-matched error-code instructions. Codes and indicator-light patterns depend on the washer design. Find your exact manual or service information before trying a diagnostic sequence.
Washer won’t drain or spin; water remains in washer
Check hose routing and restrictions
Begin with the drain hose and the drain opening: look for a kink, blockage, or other restriction. For model 110.27042602, the owner’s manual associates a hose end higher than 96 inches (244 cm) with no-drain/no-spin symptoms. Its installation instructions also call for the top of the drain hose to be at least 39 inches (99 cm) above the floor and say not to seal the hose tightly into the standpipe. These measurements are specific to that manual; check the installation guidance for your washer rather than applying them to every Model 110.

Understand the VMW long-drain code
For the VMW top-load family covered by Sears PartsDirect’s error-code guide, F9 E1 means long drain time: the pump has run for 10 minutes. The guide’s sequence is to check the drain and hose for restrictions, then unplug the washer and check the drain pump if the path is clear. A code or procedure from that guide applies only if your washer is in that VMW family and the instructions match its full model.
If those checks point to a pump problem, look up a Kenmore 110 washer drain pump by the complete model number before ordering. There is no universal pump part number for all 110-prefix washers, and retained water alone does not confirm a failed pump.

Load too wet or washer will not spin
Rule out lid and load issues
Make sure the lid is fully closed, then redistribute the laundry and reduce the load if it is packed tightly. The cited manual for model 110.27042602 says an unbalanced large load can lead to reduced spin speed and wet clothes. If balancing does not resolve the problem, consult your exact model’s troubleshooting instructions before moving on to component checks.
Do not assume every no-spin problem has the same cause
A repair reference for model 110.22932100 identifies a failed lid switch assembly as one possible cause of no spin; it is not a diagnosis for every Kenmore 110. Use the exact model number to confirm that any diagnosis or replacement part applies. Never bypass or defeat the lid interlock.

VMW washer error codes: what the cited guide covers
The following meanings and checks are for the VMW family in Sears PartsDirect’s guide, not all Kenmore 110 washers. If your washer has no display, that guide says a flashing lid-lock indicator means a fault was recorded and diagnostic mode is needed to retrieve the code. The button sequence and indicator patterns must match your exact model.

For an excessive-suds fault, a correctly labeled HE detergent is relevant only if that code or symptom applies. The amount still matters: follow the detergent maker’s measuring directions and the instructions for your washer.

When to stop and seek model-specific repair guidance
Stop at the basic checks if you are unsure how to access a component safely. Before ordering parts or attempting an internal repair, confirm the diagnosis and compatibility against the full model number and its service information. A code guide can narrow the checks for its washer family, but it cannot establish the failed component in an individual machine.
