Fake grass is not automatically a bad idea, but it is a long-lasting plastic surface with trade-offs that depend on where and how it is used. A 2026 California assessment found no significant health risks from the crumb-rubber-infill chemicals it assessed for people using synthetic sports fields. That finding is reassuring within its scope; it is not a blanket safety clearance for every turf product, chemical, or environmental impact.
What “fake grass” means matters
Artificial turf is a system, not a single material. A sports field may combine plastic fibers, backing, a shock-absorbing layer and loose infill; residential products vary too. Findings about crumb-rubber infill on sports fields cannot automatically be applied to every component or to a home lawn.
So the useful question is not simply whether artificial grass is “safe” or “bad.” It is whether a particular surface suits its location and use, and whether its heat, drainage, materials, upkeep and eventual disposal are acceptable compared with alternatives.
What is known about health risks?
California’s assessment of crumb-rubber infill
On March 5, 2026, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) released its final Synthetic Turf Study. It assessed cancer risk and noncancer hazards from chemicals detected in crumb-rubber infill used on synthetic turf fields in California. OEHHA reported no significant health risks to players, referees, coaches and spectators from on-field or off-field exposure to the field-related chemicals in that infill. The agency said the conclusions remained materially unchanged after it reviewed public comments and input from a scientific advisory panel.

This conclusion applies to the assessed infill-related chemical exposures. It does not determine the effects of surface heat, abrasion, plastic-particle release or disposal, and it does not cover every material or residential product. It should be read as a specific assessment, not proof that artificial grass is risk-free in every respect.
Does fake grass contain PFAS?
There is no basis here to say that all artificial turf contains PFAS—or that all turf currently on the market is PFAS-free. California’s Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) identifies possible exposure through inhalation, ingestion and skin contact, and possible release into the environment, including leaching into water.

DTSC paused listing the turf-and-PFAS product-chemical combination as a Priority Product while it gathers manufacturer information and conducts product testing. The agency says it may consider further regulation if PFAS persist and regulatory action is appropriate. DTSC also reported that the Synthetic Turf Council said member manufacturers were working with suppliers toward products without PFAS-based ingredients by 2025. That reported effort is not independent verification that every manufacturer or product has made the change.
If you are considering a product, ask the supplier for product-specific information about its fibers, backing and infill, and for documentation supporting any claim that it is PFAS-free. A general category label or a claim about a manufacturer’s plans does not establish the chemistry of an individual product.

What are the environmental trade-offs?
Plastic particles and infill
Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/2055 addresses intentionally added synthetic polymer microparticles. In its rationale, the European Commission’s risk-assessment committee identified infill for synthetic turf sports surfaces as the largest contributor by use of microplastics in products and the largest source of environmental emissions of intentionally present synthetic polymer microparticles at EU level. This is a policy-recognized concern about sports-field infill; it does not quantify emissions from a particular residential lawn.
Water, runoff and drainage
A plastic surface does not need the same irrigation as a living lawn, but that fact alone does not settle whether it saves water overall. Cleaning, cooling, drainage design and the landscape it replaces all affect the comparison. The government sources cited here do not establish a universal residential water-saving figure or lifecycle comparison.

Before installation, check how water will move through the product and its base, where runoff will go, and whether the site’s soil, slope and drainage can accommodate the design. Do not assume that a permeable-looking surface guarantees good drainage or prevents runoff problems.
Manufacture, replacement and disposal
Artificial turf is a durable plastic installation, so the decision lasts beyond the purchase and installation. Include repairs, replacement and end-of-life handling in the comparison; an initial price alone cannot establish which option costs less over its full life. The evidence cited here does not resolve residential products’ lifecycle costs, biodiversity effects or disposal outcomes.

Does artificial grass get too hot?
Heat is a real consideration: synthetic surfaces can be hotter than natural grass. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s 2025 review included heat among the issues it examined, but the sources cited here do not provide a comparable residential temperature figure. How much heat matters will depend on local conditions, shade and how people use the space.
For a play area, patio or other space used barefoot or by children and pets, ask the installer or local authority for current, location-appropriate guidance on surface heat and any available mitigation. Consider whether shade is practical and whether the surface will be usable at the times of day it is needed. Do not assume that one temperature measurement or a sports-field finding predicts conditions at a home.
How should you compare fake grass with alternatives?

For sports facilities, planning is also jurisdiction-specific. New South Wales government guidance covers planning, design, delivery and management of synthetic sports fields; it says new proposals must consider environmental factors. Its assessment addendum applies to certain new or upgraded synthetic fields proceeding without consent under specified planning instruments. That is a local planning process, not a universal ban or endorsement.
The New Jersey DEP’s 2025 review considered user chemical exposure, runoff and flooding, microplastic migration, heat, climate emissions, injuries and disposal. It concluded that the weight of evidence remains limited in several areas, making conclusive findings difficult, and recommends that communities assess their needs and weigh potential pros and cons. That uncertainty does not mean every concern is equally unresolved: the California infill assessment has a defined, reassuring health conclusion, while other questions require their own evidence and local context.

A practical checklist before installing
- Define the use. Decide whether the space is for sport, play, pets, appearance or another purpose, and how often it will be used.
- Check the site. Consider sun and shade, local heat, slope, soil, drainage and where water will flow.
- Get material details. Ask what the fibers, backing, infill and shock layer are made of. Request product-specific evidence for chemical claims rather than relying on category-wide assurances.
- Plan maintenance and end of life. Find out what cleaning and repairs entail, how damaged material is handled, and what disposal or recycling options actually exist locally.
- Compare full-life costs and water needs. Include installation, upkeep, repair and replacement, and compare with realistic local alternatives rather than assuming a universal saving.
- Check local rules. Ask the relevant planning authority whether the project or product is covered by local requirements before work begins.
