Autodesk’s storage-bin project demonstrates that workflow, including interlocking parts, corner reliefs, kerf-compensated DXF export, and adapting the design for 3-axis milling. The model can be resized quickly; the physical bin still depends on your material, machine, and cut settings.
1. Measure the space and decide what must fit inside
Record the usable width, depth, and height where the bin will sit. Also consider how it will be lifted or pulled out: a bin that fills a drawer exactly may be difficult to handle, and a shelf lip or nearby hardware may reduce the practical opening.
Separate the bin’s external dimensions from its desired internal capacity. The walls and bottom take up space, so an outside measurement does not describe the room available for stored items. The right fit allowance depends on the space and how the bin will be used; Autodesk’s project overview does not prescribe a universal tolerance.
2. Choose the stock and cutting method
Decide what material you will use and how you will cut it before finalizing panel dimensions. Material thickness changes the size of the panels and how their joints meet. The intended cutting method also affects the geometry and compensation required. Autodesk’s project teaches changing the material thickness but does not specify a universal stock, thickness, kerf, clearance, or machine setting.

Compare available methods against your actual material and equipment rather than assuming one is best for every bin:
- Laser or waterjet: Autodesk’s project covers exporting kerf-compensated DXF files for these methods.
- 3-axis milling or routing: The project includes a lesson on modifying the design for 3-axis milling. Confirm that the machine’s work area and material capability suit the parts, and follow the machine maker’s current CAM guidance.
For any method, check the stock’s thickness and size, the required part geometry and edge quality, the machine’s work area, and the compensation your cutting workflow requires. The cited project does not compare methods by cost, speed, precision, or safety, so those trade-offs must be assessed for the machine and material you plan to use.

3. Build a parametric model
Use named parameters for the bin’s overall dimensions and stock thickness so that resizing can update dependent parts consistently. Autodesk’s official learning module uses sketches, extrusions, patterns, and a top-down assembly; its workflow uses the Combine tool to create interlocking box parts. It teaches users to “Set up and use parameters, dimensions, and geometric constraints to change the model.” Autodesk’s storage-bin CAD project is a guided example of this approach.
After changing a dimension or material thickness, review the whole assembly rather than just the outer envelope. Panel edges, slots, and interlocking features all need to remain compatible with the revised dimensions.

4. Account for inside corners and joints
A round cutting tool cannot create a perfectly sharp internal corner. Autodesk’s project addresses this with circular inside-corner relief cuts, often called “dog bones,” which give adjoining parts room to assemble. Their size depends on the tool and the required fit; the official overview does not give a universal dog-bone size, cutter diameter, clearance, or press-fit setting.
Check the joint geometry against your intended cutting method and the actual tool or machine guidance. Do not assume a fit from the CAD view alone: no physical prototype or fit test is established for the referenced project.

5. Export a file suited to the cutting workflow
For laser or waterjet cutting, Autodesk’s project teaches kerf compensation and DXF export. It also teaches modifying the design for 3-axis milling. A DXF is not a guarantee that every machine or CAM workflow will accept the file unchanged, so confirm the required export settings and processing steps for your equipment.
If you use Onshape, its drawing workflow lets you add dimensions and export a drawing as DXF, DWG, or PDF. See Onshape’s Drawing Basics help. Onshape also documents a custom feature that nests planar parts on cut sheets with specified sheet dimensions and spacing; this is a separate capability, not a tested version of Autodesk’s storage-bin model. What the CAD workflow can—and cannot—settle
Parametric modeling makes it practical to resize a bin and update related geometry, but it does not determine universal machine settings or prove that a particular bin will fit or withstand a particular load. Autodesk’s module is listed as a 2-hour learning module; that is the course duration, not a promised time to design, cut, or assemble a bin. Its overview does not state a material recommendation, kerf value, joint clearance, cutter size, feed rate, speed, or load rating.
Use the model as a design workflow, then validate the exported file and settings against your stock, machine, and CAM instructions before cutting.
