The fan bracket must be supported by sound concrete using the anchor type and installation details approved for that model. An ordinary light-fixture box is not automatically strong enough to support a fan. Before drilling, identify the slab and check for concealed services; if you cannot confirm a safe drilling location, stop and consult a qualified professional.
Check whether your fan allows direct concrete mounting
Start with the exact fan model and its current installation manual. Look for a concrete-ceiling mounting method and follow its instructions for the bracket, anchors, and any safety cable. Do not borrow hardware dimensions from another fan model, even if it is from the same manufacturer.
Some models permit the mounting bracket to attach directly to concrete. Others may require a fan-rated outlet box or another specified structural support. Use only the arrangement the fan manufacturer approves for your model and actual ceiling. Do not improvise by adding a box or fastener configuration that the instructions do not support.
Can you use the existing ceiling box?
Use an existing box to support the fan only if it is clearly fan-rated, properly secured, and compatible with the fan’s installation instructions. A box that held a light fixture is not necessarily designed to carry a fan. If its rating or support is uncertain, do not hang the fan from it; confirm the installation method with the manufacturer or a qualified installer.

Confirm the concrete and drilling location are suitable
The concrete must be sound where the bracket anchors will go. Hunter’s concrete-mounting instructions say the concrete should be free of cracks and voids near the mounting holes. They also warn not to hang the fan if the bracket screws can be turned easily by hand. These are cautions from that fan document, not universal anchor specifications.
Before drilling, establish that the proposed location is clear of reinforcement, post-tensioning, electrical wiring, conduits, and other concealed services. General fan manuals cannot determine what is inside a particular slab. If you do not know the slab construction or cannot verify a safe, approved drilling location, do not guess. Check building records or consult building management and a qualified construction professional.

Choose anchors from the fan and anchor instructions
Use only the anchor type and dimensions specified for the selected fan and installation configuration. Follow the anchor manufacturer’s current instructions for hole diameter and depth, embedment, spacing, edge distance, and installation. Hunter’s concrete-mounting document calls for a suitable carbide-tipped masonry bit and says hole size and depth must follow the anchor maker’s recommendation; it also describes using new, unused anchors and setting them flush. Do not treat those cautions as a universal recipe for every anchor or slab.
Concrete hardware varies by fan and mounting arrangement. For example, the Haiku S3150-A2 manual describes different anchor sizes for its low-profile, standard, and universal configurations; a separate Haiku L-Series guide specifies a different direct-mount arrangement. Those examples are model-specific, not interchangeable recommendations. Follow the manual for your fan rather than selecting a familiar-looking bolt size.

Install the fan safely
- Read the fan and anchor instructions. Confirm the approved concrete-mounting configuration, required bracket and hardware, and any safety-cable arrangement required by the manufacturer or local code.
- Shut off and verify power. Switch off the circuit at the breaker before starting. Verify the power is off before handling wiring, as Hunter directs in its ceiling-fan installation guidance.
- Verify the mounting location. Confirm the concrete is sound and that the drilling location is approved and clear of concealed services. If that cannot be established, stop and get qualified advice.
- Install the specified anchors. Use the anchor manufacturer’s required drill bit, hole dimensions, and installation procedure. Do not proceed if the holes, anchors, or concrete do not meet those instructions.
- Secure the bracket and assemble the fan. Follow the exact fan manual for fastening the bracket, attaching any specified safety cable, wiring, and assembling the fan. Follow applicable national and local electrical codes; use a qualified electrician if the wiring or code requirements are unclear.
- Inspect before operating. Check the completed installation against the fan manual. If the bracket or anchors feel loose, or the concrete is cracked or damaged, do not hang or operate the fan until the support is assessed and corrected.
When to call a professional
Get help from a qualified electrician or construction professional if the fan’s concrete-mounting method is unclear, the existing box’s fan rating cannot be confirmed, wiring is unfamiliar, the slab may be post-tensioned, or concealed services cannot be ruled out. Local code and permit requirements also depend on your jurisdiction and project; manufacturer instructions do not establish those site-specific requirements.
