Barack and Michelle Obama bought their Martha’s Vineyard home for a reported $11.75 million in December 2019. The 29.3-acre property is in Edgartown, beside Edgartown Great Pond—not directly on the Atlantic Ocean. The $12 million headline figure is a rounded version of the reported purchase price.
Where is the Obama home on Martha’s Vineyard?
The home fronts Edgartown Great Pond in Edgartown. A barrier beach lies between the pond and the Atlantic, so descriptions of the estate as oceanfront can be misleading: its immediate waterfront setting is the pond. The Vineyard Gazette reported the property covers 29.3 acres and the house measures 6,892 square feet. The Vineyard Gazette’s 2019 account gives those figures.
How much did the Obamas pay?
Dukes County land records, as reported by The Vineyard Gazette and FOX Business, show a purchase price of $11.75 million in December 2019. FOX Business reported that the property had been listed for $14.85 million, making the recorded price lower than the asking price. The $12 million figure in the headline rounds the reported sale price. FOX Business reported the sale and listing price.
The Vineyard Gazette also reported that the transaction was expected to generate a $235,000 Island Land Bank transfer fee under the two-percent fee. That was an expected amount, not a separately audited final payment.

What is known about the house and its construction?
Reports identify Bradenburger Taylor Lombardo Architects of San Francisco as the designers and local builder John Early as the builder. The house was built in 2001, according to The Vineyard Gazette. The Gazette’s account is the source for the construction date and project attribution.
Listing-derived coverage describes a seven-bedroom house with a pool, detached garage, barn, vaulted ceilings and a stone fireplace. These are descriptions relayed from real-estate materials and reporting, not details established through a public inspection of the home. FOX Business quoted the listing’s phrase “spacious and dramatic”; that is promotional listing language, not an independent architectural assessment.
Bathroom count varies by report
The Vineyard Gazette and FOX Business report nine bathrooms, while Architectural Digest reports eight and a half. The published accounts therefore do not agree on the count. Architectural Digest’s coverage gives the eight-and-a-half figure.
Is this the same property as Blue Heron Farm?
No. Blue Heron Farm is a separate property in Chilmark, not the Edgartown home the Obamas purchased. The family began vacationing at Blue Heron Farm as renters in 2009. A Realtor.com report published June 18, 2025, says they later rented another nearby home and bought the Edgartown property in 2019. Realtor.com’s report distinguishes the properties.

Blue Heron Farm was listed for $39 million in 2025 and had entered contract by June of that year, but the reported offer price was unknown. That listing price belongs to the Chilmark property, not the Obamas’ Edgartown purchase.
