The available information does not identify three chairs tested by this author or include the author’s test notes, so it cannot support a first-person “I tested” recommendation. What it does support is a practical way to judge chair fit and adjustment, plus clearly attributed examples from independent reviewers. The right chair is the one that fits your body and workstation—not simply one marketed as ergonomic.
What to check before choosing a chair
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends trying chairs before buying and choosing a backrest that supports the lower back while accommodating different seated postures. Its guidance treats the chair as part of a workstation, alongside the desk, monitor and keyboard. Read OSHA’s chair guidance.
Seat height and depth
When seated, your feet should rest stably on the floor or a footrest. The seat should support your thighs without pressing behind your knees. Seat-depth adjustment can help accommodate different body sizes; check that you can sit back against the backrest while maintaining that clearance.
Backrest and lumbar support
Look for a backrest that follows your spinal curve and supports the lower back. Adjustable lumbar height and backrest recline can help you position the support, but an adjustment is useful only if it suits your body and can be set comfortably. These features are fit considerations, not evidence that a chair prevents or treats back pain.

Armrests and desk fit
Armrests should let your shoulders relax and your arms stay close to your body. If they are too high or wide, they can interfere with relaxed positioning or prevent the chair from reaching the desk. Check whether the arms adjust or can be removed, and try the chair at your actual workstation if possible.
Base and casters
OSHA recommends a stable five-leg base with casters suited to the floor. A chair should remain stable as you move and work, rather than forcing you to reach or twist to compensate for its placement.

What independent chair reviews can—and cannot—tell you
Review results are specific to the publication’s test methods and the chair configuration it assessed. They are useful comparison points, not a substitute for checking whether a particular chair fits you.
TechGearLab’s comparison
In a comparison updated 14 March 2025, TechGearLab named the Branch Ergonomic Chair “Best for Most People,” citing adjustability and comfort while noting hard armrests and a relatively narrow seat. It named the SIHOO M18 Ergonomic Big and Tall “Best Buy for Back Support”; the publication describes adjustable lumbar support and reports a 330-pound manufacturer weight limit, while noting difficult adjustments and a fixed seat pan. It also named the Steelcase Leap “Best Luxury Office Chair.” These are TechGearLab’s judgments, not this author’s test results. Confirm the exact model and current configuration before relying on specifications. See TechGearLab’s comparison.

- High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
- Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
- Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
- Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
- Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching
Which?’s review method
Which?’s guide, last checked in July 2026, says its chair tests were conducted in April 2024, June 2023 and July 2022. Its methodology includes expert assessment of adjustable parts, assembly, lumbar support, adjustability and safety, as well as an uninterrupted one-hour panel sit for comfort. Detailed scores and Best Buy results are restricted to members, so the public information does not establish its hidden model rankings. Read Which?’s office-chair guide.
Set up the chair with the rest of your workstation
Adjust the chair together with the monitor, keyboard and desk. OSHA recommends stable foot support, relaxed shoulders, arms close to the body, and a backrest that supports the spinal curve. If the seat cannot be lowered enough for your feet to rest stably, OSHA describes a footrest as an option. If the chair lacks lumbar support, a removable cushion may be a temporary option. Neither accessory replaces checking whether the chair and workstation fit you. This is general workstation guidance, not individualized medical advice.

How to make a decision you can trust
- Try the chair if possible. OSHA advises trying different chairs before purchase. Check that you can sit back, support your feet, and keep the seat edge from pressing behind your knees.
- Test the adjustments. Set seat height, depth, lumbar position, recline and armrests. Notice whether the controls are understandable and whether the chair can be positioned comfortably at your desk.
- Evaluate comfort over a realistic work period. Separate your own experience from review findings. A one-hour panel sit, as described by Which?, is not the same method as TechGearLab’s multi-day testing.
- Check the exact offer. Compare the precise model and configuration available in your market, and verify current price, warranty and return terms before buying; these can change.
For a “best office chair for back pain” search, treat comfort and support as personal fit questions rather than proof of a medical benefit. If pain is a concern, chair reviews cannot establish what will treat it.
