A 2016 Make: report described a broad free-plan archive at Cigar Box Nation, while current alternatives range from downloadable blueprints to printed full-scale lutherie plans and simple household-material activities.
What was in Cigar Box Nation’s free plan archive?
In a report published December 10, 2016, Make: described Cigar Box Nation as having recently updated a free DIY instrument-plan archive. The plans covered cigar box guitars, ukuleles, dulcimers, drums, washboards, “nail violins” and PVC tube instruments. The report also described a discussion area, a gallery of builders’ work and a store selling instrument parts and cigar box amps. Those details describe the site at the time of the report; they do not establish that the archive or those features are available now. Read the 2016 Make: report.
The report said the instructions used photographs, explanatory captions and call-outs. It also mentioned Joshua Gayou’s 178-page ebook, A Guide to Advanced Cigar Box Guitar Making, which covered tools, hardware, woodworking, electronics and finishing. The report does not establish whether that ebook is currently available.

Printed full-scale plans from the Guild of American Luthiers
The Guild of American Luthiers says it offers over 80 instrument plans, spanning guitars, hammered dulcimers and zithers, harp guitars, ukuleles and small plucked instruments, world instruments, mandolins, bowed instruments, bass viol and lutes. The Guild prints plans at full scale and says it does not provide PDF or other digital versions. It cautions that the plans come from member submissions made over time, so their scope and presentation are not comprehensive or uniform. See the Guild’s plans page for details.
Household-material projects from the Institute of Imagination
If you want to begin with things already at home rather than specialty parts, the Institute of Imagination’s Junk Instruments activity outlines a shaker, drum, scraper, rubber band guitar and bottle whistle. Suggested materials include bottles, cardboard tubes, elastic bands, cans, rice or lentils and tape. The activity encourages trying sounds while building and warns readers to cover sharp edges on an empty tin with tape.

How to choose a plan that fits your project
Plan formats and project demands differ, so compare the specific instructions rather than assuming every free plan is equally detailed or beginner-friendly.
- Instrument: Decide whether you want a playable string instrument, percussion, a sound-maker for children or another project. The archive types and alternatives above cover very different builds.
- Materials and tools: Check the full list before starting. A household-material activity may use common objects; a wooden or electric instrument can require woodworking tools, hardware or electronics. Complexity and equipment depend on the chosen project.
- Instruction detail: Look for photographs, captions, call-outs, step-by-step directions and measurements. Musicmakers describes full-size blueprints; the Guild’s plans are printed full scale, while its presentation varies by plan.
- Format: Confirm whether you can download the plan or must obtain a printed copy. The Guild explicitly does not offer PDFs or other digital versions.
- Build scope: A simple sound-maker and an instrument involving woodworking or electronics are not interchangeable starting points. Choose a plan whose described techniques and equipment match what you can do.
As the Institute of Imagination puts it, “Sound happens when something vibrates.” Its activity illustrates the idea with a plucked rubber band, a bottle blown across and a tapped tin. It also says, “You don’t need to know how to play an instrument. Just start with a sound you like.” Explore the activity.

Do you need to buy parts or a guide?
Not necessarily. For a cigar box guitar, buy parts only after choosing a plan and checking that each item matches its specifications; the historical Make: report’s mention of a parts store does not verify current stock or compatible products. Likewise, the advanced ebook it described may be useful to someone seeking more instruction, but its present availability is not established. Free plans and household-material activities can be a no-purchase starting point.
