To uncoil it, keep hold of the loops, release the tie, and let the blade open slowly away from your face and body. Wear gloves and eye protection, keep other people clear, and follow the blade maker’s instructions when available.
Prepare a safe work area
- Stop the saw and remove the blade according to the machine’s instructions. This procedure is for handling a removed blade, not for work near a running saw.
- Wear gloves and eye protection. The cited handling guidance recommends these, but does not specify a universal glove cut rating. Do not treat this advice as a reason to wear gloves while operating a saw; follow the machine’s operating safety instructions.
- Move bystanders outside the blade’s sweep. If you work on the floor, lay down cardboard or a soft mat to help protect the teeth.
- Have a twist tie, binder clip, or tape ready to secure the finished coil.
How to coil the blade
The goal is three compact loops, formed by controlling the blade’s spring rather than letting it snap or whip into shape. The exact starting orientation and hand or foot movement differ among published guides, so use the sequence supplied by your blade maker when one is available.
- Hold the removed blade as a large loop, keeping a firm two-handed grip and directing the loop away from yourself and anyone nearby.
- Use a controlled twist-and-fold motion to turn the large loop into a figure-eight-like shape and then three smaller loops. Keep the blade under control throughout; do not force a sudden bend or let go to make the loops form.
- Bring the three loops together while maintaining your grip. Secure the gathered coil with a twist tie, binder clip, or tape before setting it down or moving it.
The documented sequences are not identical: WOOD Magazine describes steadying the lower section with a foot and pushing down while making two half-turns; Rockler describes a figure-eight motion followed by another half-turn; Wood-Mizer starts from a different orientation. Their teeth-facing directions also vary. These are source-specific approaches, not a universal orientation rule. See WOOD Magazine’s coiling guide, Rockler’s blade-storage guide, or Wood-Mizer Europe’s folding instructions for their respective sequences.
How to uncoil the blade
- Hold the coil securely before removing its tie, clip, or tape. Keep your hands on the loops so the blade cannot open uncontrolled.
- Direct the blade away from your face and body, then separate the crossed loops gradually. Let the blade expand under control; do not throw or drop the coil.
- Keep your hands low and your arms extended away from your body as the blade opens into a larger loop. Stop if you lose control of the loops and regain a secure grip before continuing.
Wood-Mizer’s guide describes separating the crossed loops and slowly moving the hands apart while rotating the forearms; WOOD Magazine likewise advises a slow opening with hands low and arms extended away. The Wood-Mizer instructions and WOOD Magazine guide show their respective methods.
