Use liquid fish fertilizer according to the directions on its own label: dilute it at the stated rate, then apply the mixture over the specified area and root zone. There is no single dilution or N-P-K ratio that applies to every fish fertilizer. For a vegetable garden, it can be especially useful while seedlings and transplants are getting established, but it is not a guaranteed way to improve germination or increase pepper yields.
What fish fertilizer is—and why labels differ
Fish emulsion is a liquid byproduct of fish meal and fish oil processing. Processing removes solids and adjusts pH to help prevent spoilage. Products may be labeled fish emulsion or hydrolyzed fish fertilizer, and their nutrient analyses vary.
For example, Illinois Extension describes 2-4-1 as a typical fish-emulsion N-P-K analysis, while University of Maryland Extension gives fishmeal emulsion at 5-1-1 as one example among a broader range of fish products. Neither figure is a universal formula. Check the guaranteed analysis on the product you have rather than choosing a dose based on another brand’s ratio. How to dilute and apply it
- Check the label for your plant and application method. Directions can differ for vegetables, other garden plants, trees and shrubs, and foliar applications. Follow the rate for the use you intend; do not transfer one product’s directions to another.
- Measure the concentrate and water as directed. Do not assume a standard ounces-per-gallon dilution. If a soil test is available, use it to help guide fertilizer needs; otherwise, University of Maryland Extension advises following the fertilizer label.
- Apply the mixed solution over the labeled area. Direct it to the soil where roots are growing and distribute it across the area specified. In one University of Maryland Extension answer, an example product called for 1–2 ounces per gallon of water for 20 square feet. That meant applying the gallon across the 20 square feet—not giving each plant a gallon. It is an example of interpreting that product’s directions, not a general rate recommendation. Ask Extension: Fish fertilizer application
- Water in garden applications as directed. Applying water helps dissolve fertilizer and reduces the risk of root salt burn. Do not fertilize drought-stressed plants.
A product label illustrates why you should check the container: Bonide Garden Rich hydrolyzed fish fertilizer is identified as 2-4-0, with directions that vary by use. Its rates are not instructions for other products. Bonide Garden Rich Hydrolyzed Fish Fertilizer

When it may help in a vegetable garden
Seedlings and transplants
Liquid fertilizer can help seedlings and transplants establish, particularly in early spring when soil is cool. Apply it at the product’s labeled rate and account for the soil and crop; it is not a substitute for diagnosing pests, disease, weather stress or unsuitable growing conditions. University of Maryland Extension
Long-season feeding
Liquid fish fertilizer may be less convenient than dry or granular fertilizer for feeding crops over a long season because soluble nutrients can leach more readily from the root zone. Soil with high organic matter may need less fertilizer; the Maryland Extension answer uses more than 5% organic matter as an example. Consider crop and soil needs, including periods such as fruiting when nitrogen demand may be high, rather than applying automatically on a fixed schedule.

University of Maryland Extension gives an illustrative comparison in which fish emulsion releases 85% of its nutrients during the season applied, compared with 5–10% for plant-based compost. This is an example on that extension page, not a universal measurement for every fish product or compost. University of Maryland Extension
What fish fertilizer does not reliably promise
Better seed germination
Do not soak seeds in fish fertilizer expecting better germination. NC State Extension summarizes a study in which pepper and tomato seeds soaked in fish, seaweed, fish-and-seaweed, or water had no different germination rates from one another or from untreated seeds. NC State Extension

Higher sweet-pepper yields from foliar spray
Evidence summarized by NC State Extension found no significant difference in sweet-pepper yield and grade in greenhouse and field work involving biweekly foliar sprays; the field result followed one harvest. Illinois Extension also reports no yield difference for sweet peppers treated with fish-emulsion foliar sprays. These findings concern the specific sweet-pepper work described, not every crop or every use of fish fertilizer. NC State notes that the underlying thesis project was completed in 2004 and that its page was updated in 2022. NC State Extension; Illinois Extension
Odor, runoff and other precautions
- Expect a strong smell. Illinois Extension describes liquid fish emulsion as smelling like blended fish. Use care with smelly liquid products indoors. Illinois Extension
- Avoid overapplication. Excess nitrate and phosphate can leach through soil or move in runoff and contribute to water pollution. Follow the label and use soil-test results where available. University of Maryland Extension
- Do not count on fertilizer to fix unrelated plant problems. It will not resolve damage caused by pests, disease, weather or poor site conditions.
- Treat animal-digging reports as anecdotal. Illinois Extension recounts raccoons digging in patio containers after fish emulsion was used, but this is not established research. Illinois Extension
How to compare fish fertilizer products
Compare the guaranteed nutrient analysis, whether the product is an emulsion or hydrolysate, and its directions for your crop and application method. Check how much diluted solution covers the stated area, and look for an organic certification only if your growing system requires one. A higher or lower N-P-K number by itself does not show that a product is better; the right choice depends on your soil, crop and intended use. University of Maryland Extension
