For a slight, stable gap in unfinished wood, fit and glue in a thin sliver of matching stock, then trim and sand it flush. For a small gap in prefinished cabinet molding, wax filler is a touch-up option. If the joint keeps opening, investigate movement before filling it: a cosmetic patch may not last.
Choose the repair for the surface and joint

A gap between trim and the wall is a different joint from the miter seam. The approaches here address the miter itself.
Close a slight gap in unfinished wood with a sliver
WOOD Magazine describes a fitted wood sliver as a repair for a slight gap. Matching leftover stock can make the repair less conspicuous. The method involves cutting into the workpiece, so weigh the piece’s value and condition before proceeding; on a valuable finished piece, do not make an irreversible cut casually.
- Inspect and dry-fit. Confirm the gap is slight and stable. If a thin sliver can be worked into the existing opening, use that opening rather than cutting a new kerf.
- Make a controlled kerf only if needed. If the sliver will not fit, the published method uses scrap guides on the outside faces to guide the saw cut. Cut only deep enough to remove the opening without severing the joint.
- Prepare a matching sliver. Cut a thin piece from leftover project stock, orienting it so the exposed grain suits the finished work. Sand a slight taper along one edge to help it fit.
- Glue and fit. Apply glue in the kerf and on the sliver, then ease the sliver into place. Let the glue dry.
- Trim and finish. Trim the excess and sand the repair flush. For a tiny residual void in raw wood, WOOD Magazine describes applying glue and sanding lightly so dust works into the gap; remove excess glue after it dries.
This is a published woodworking procedure, not a guarantee of an invisible repair. The appearance of a dust-and-glue fill depends on the wood and finish.

Touch up a small gap in prefinished molding
For prefinished cabinet molding, Fine Homebuilding describes wax filler for a small hole or miter: apply it, scrape off the excess, and polish the area. The same source notes PVA glue for joining corners during installation. That installation guidance is distinct from using filler to touch up a finished surface.
Why a miter gap may return
Wood can move as its moisture content changes with the seasons, opening a joint that appeared tight at installation. Fine Homebuilding discusses movement and saw setup as factors in preventing gaps. A repeat opening is therefore a reason to inspect the joint and conditions, not simply to apply a more rigid cosmetic fill.

In a 1996 Journal of Light Construction Q&A, cabinetmaker Michael Poster wrote, “Wood movement is proportionate to board width.” The article gives historical recommendations of 8% moisture content for trim generally, 11% in damp coastal areas, and 6% in arid climates, with 1% to 2% variation described as acceptable. These are Poster’s regional recommendations from 1996, not current code or universal specifications. Prevention starts with accurate cuts and a sound corner fit. WOOD Magazine illustrates how small errors can accumulate: for a four-corner box with eight miter cuts, it says an error of even 0.25° on each cut adds up to 2°. That example explains one way setup error can compound; it is not a measurement of every miter problem.
