Marigolds are not a reliable all-purpose pest repellent. Their clearest documented use is helping manage some plant-parasitic nematodes when the right species is planted in the right way. A border of African marigolds may help with certain above-ground pests, but evidence that marigolds keep aphids or whiteflies off nearby vegetables is limited.
Which pests can marigolds help with?
Marigolds are Tagetes species. Their potential uses differ by pest and planting method, so a border intended to support beneficial insects is not the same strategy as growing a nematode-management cover crop.
| Goal | Marigold type | Planting approach | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potentially discourage certain above-ground pests | African marigold (Tagetes erecta) | Plant as a border | University of Maryland Extension says a border may repel certain pests and attract beneficial insects; it does not establish broad or guaranteed protection. Source. |
| Manage some plant-parasitic nematodes | French marigold (Tagetes patula); specific varieties are recommended for some uses | Mass planting, rotation, or a cover crop, depending on local guidance | Extension sources describe nematode suppression in certain circumstances, but results vary by nematode and planting method. How to use marigolds for nematode management
Marigolds are best known in these sources for suppressing some plant-parasitic nematodes. UF/IFAS explains that many marigolds produce alpha-terthienyl in root exudates, a compound shown to reduce certain nematode populations. The effect is not universal: the nematode species and the way marigolds are grown matter.
1. Identify the nematode problem
Do not plant marigolds as a diagnosis-free cure for struggling plants. Nematode species differ in their response; for example, UC IPM says marigolds do not work well against northern root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne hapla). Ask a local extension service or diagnostic lab about identifying the problem and choosing a suitable approach.

The elegant carved profile of green lace and soft matte texture create a spectacular, dramatic backdrop for bright and lush double inflorescences.
- Arrangement Potential: Borders and parterre arabesques: graphic velvet ribbons. Container gardening: cascading flowering scattering in planters, pots, and window boxes. Massive carpet plantings: a kaleidoscopic canvas. Fusion mixes: an expressive contrasting base for tall garden crops.
2. Choose a species and method for the target
Oklahoma State Extension identifies certain French marigold varieties (Tagetes patula) for reducing nematodes in their immediate root zones and recommends mass planting or rotation for root-knot nematodes. Delaware Cooperative Extension describes another approach: grow marigolds as a cover crop, then till the residues into the soil before planting the desired crop. These are specific management approaches, not a universal spacing recipe or guarantee.
3. Don’t rely on casual interplanting
Simply putting a few marigolds beside vegetables is not an established nematode-control method. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions says intercropping marigolds with another crop has not been shown to reduce nematode populations. Match the planting plan to the identified pest and local extension recommendations.

Do marigolds repel aphids, whiteflies, or other insects?
Claims that marigolds broadly repel insects from neighboring crops go beyond what these sources establish. An Ask Extension response says there is no documented study establishing marigolds as an effective way to prevent aphid problems on nearby plants. Maryland Extension’s more cautious advice is that an African marigold border may repel certain pests and attract beneficial insects; it does not promise protection from aphids, whiteflies, or any particular pest.
Companion planting can still add diversity to a garden, but it should not replace monitoring or pest-specific controls. Oklahoma State Extension notes that significant data proving the value of companion planting or intercropping generally are lacking, while allowing that particular plant effects and mechanisms may exist.

Know the trade-offs and limits
- Not every marigold is interchangeable. The cited nematode guidance focuses on French marigolds, while Maryland’s suggested border for possible above-ground pest effects is African marigold.
- Not every nematode is susceptible. Marigolds are not effective against northern root-knot nematode according to UC IPM.
- Marigolds can support insects as well as deter them. Delaware Extension notes they can support thrips, which are prey for minute pirate bugs. A plant’s role in the garden may involve supporting a food web rather than simply repelling pests.
- “Pot marigold” is a different plant. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is sometimes called pot marigold; the Tagetes marigolds discussed for these pest-management uses are not Calendula.
