To replace a propane grill regulator, shut off the grill and cylinder, disconnect the old hose-and-regulator assembly, fit a replacement specified for your exact grill, then leak-check every connection you disturbed before use. Thread direction and part fit vary by model, so follow the grill’s manual rather than forcing a fitting or assuming a generic regulator will fit.

Before you begin: identify the right replacement

There is no single regulator assembly that fits every propane grill. Find the grill’s model label and check its owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s parts lookup. Match the replacement to the exact model, fuel configuration, connection, and region. A manufacturer listing may cover only a defined range of models and may ask you to verify fit; for example, see Weber’s parts and schematics resources.

Do not rely on appearance alone. If you cannot confirm compatibility from the model information, contact the grill manufacturer or an authorized parts source before installation. Use the assembly and connection instructions for your grill.

Replace the regulator and hose

This is a general overview, not a substitute for the instructions for your specific grill. The manufacturer’s procedure may specify different tools or connection details. Weber’s replacement guidance, for example, notes that some fittings have left-handed threads, which loosen clockwise; never assume the direction or force a fitting. See Weber’s regulator replacement guidance.

  2. Disconnect the regulator from the cylinder. Follow the cylinder and grill instructions for disconnecting the coupling.
  3. Loosen the grill-side connection. Locate where the regulator hose attaches to the grill. Use the tools and thread direction specified in your manual. Weber describes using two open-end or adjustable wrenches: one to loosen the fitting and the other to hold the counter-connection.
  4. Remove the old assembly and install the replacement. Fit the model-compatible hose and regulator by following the grill’s instructions. Keep the fitting aligned to avoid cross-threading; stop if it will not engage as directed.
  5. Reconnect the cylinder and leak-check before lighting. Test every connection you disconnected or reconnected using the method below.

Leak-check every disturbed connection

Weber’s owner manual calls for a leak check after assembly and whenever a gas fitting has been disconnected and reconnected. It identifies the cylinder-to-regulator and regulator-to-valve connections as fittings to check. Use your grill’s manual for its specified method and response to a leak. Weber’s instructions are available in its manual and support resources.

  1. With the grill controls off, apply commercial gas leak-check solution or a solution of 20% liquid soap and 80% water to each disturbed fitting.
  2. Watch the connections for bubbles. Bubbles indicate escaping gas. Never use a match, lighter, or other flame to test for a leak.
  3. If bubbles appear, shut off the cylinder valve and do not operate the grill. Follow the manufacturer’s service instructions. If gas is escaping, move away and follow the manual’s emergency guidance; the cited Weber manual says not to try to correct the problem yourself and to call the fire department.
  4. If no bubbles appear, rinse the checked connections with water; Weber notes that some leak-check solutions may be slightly corrosive.

When to replace the hose and regulator

Do not use the grill if its hose is damaged. Weber recommends replacing the hose and regulator every fifth year and notes that local law may require a different interval. Treat that as Weber’s guidance, not a universal replacement rule; check the grill manual and applicable local requirements. See Weber’s regulator and hose guidance.
