Plant gazanias in full sun and soil that drains freely. Water only after the soil has dried, and deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued bloom. In climates where they will not survive winter outdoors, grow them as annuals or keep them in containers you can protect from frost.

Choose a sunny, well-drained spot

Gazanias suit hot, dry beds, rock gardens, and containers. Give them full sun: the University of Florida IFAS Extension says, “Full day sun is required for healthy plants.” Partial shade can mean weaker growth and fewer flowers.

Drainage is more important than rich soil. Gazanias tolerate sandy and relatively poor soil, but prolonged wet conditions can lead to disease and root rot. If your garden soil stays soggy, improve drainage or plant in a container with drainage holes. In humid or rainy regions, avoid sites that remain wet and resist watering too often.

Plant gazanias in a bed or container

In a garden bed

Prepare a sunny area where water can drain away. For a ground-cover planting, space plants 12 to 18 inches apart, as recommended by UF/IFAS Extension. The plants are reported to grow 6 to 12 inches tall; the same extension says they can form a ground cover over several months.

  • These gigantic blooms blaze with vibrant color and completely cover the small plants from early summer until frost, which you can't improve. What makes this Gazania line so special is its combination of very large blooms, an early and long bloom season, and ultra-tolerant, low-spreading plants.
  • This Gazania is a sure winner in any flower bed due to its visual appeal and ongoing reliability. It has multicolored 4" flowers on compact 8 - 10" plants that will also spread 6 - 8".

Gazania is considered an annual in the North but is a short-lived perennial in the South. If you mess up the flowers and drop them where you want more, they reseed easily from flower seeds.
  • Seeding Rate: 2 - 3 seeds per plant. Gazania is a tough little plant that likes full sun, tolerates all soils, and thrives with moderate watering. It blooms profusely in the south in fall, winter, and late spring, then intermittently in the hottest months of summer, then profusely again in fall.
  • You can grow Gazania plants in clusters for a generous bedding ground cover, or you can even use this Gazania mix in hanging baskets or sunny patio containers. Gazania is native to South Africa and is easy and fun to grow.

In a container

Use a pot with drainage holes and a freely draining growing medium. Containers are useful where garden soil stays wet and make it easier to move plants to shelter when cold weather threatens. Avoid letting water collect in a saucer beneath the pot.

Water sparingly and deadhead for more flowers

Let the soil dry between waterings. Gazanias need less water than many common annuals and perennials, so water during prolonged dry spells rather than following a fixed schedule. Frequent watering or persistently wet soil can harm the roots.

Start gazanias from seed or cuttings

North Carolina State University Extension lists both seed and stem cuttings as propagation options. Starting from seed is one way to grow gazanias when you have time to propagate them; the extension sources cited here do not give a cultivar-by-cultivar seed-starting schedule. Stem cuttings can also be rooted and overwintered.

  • Colorful: Gazania flowers boast a rich variety of colors, ranging from bright yellows, oranges, to deep reds and bronzes, with some mixed varieties even featuring stripes or spots.

  • Drought Tolerance: Gazanias exhibit excellent drought tolerance; once established, their water requirements are relatively low. This makes them highly suitable for regions with hot.
  • Sunlight: Gazanias are classic sun-loving plants, requiring ample sunlight to thrive and produce their most beautiful blooms. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is optimal for their growth.
  • Use: Gazanias are excellent as groundcover plants; their low-growing, compact habit makes them a superb choice for filling gaps in flower beds, covering slopes, or as edging plants in containers.

Plan for winter according to your climate

Gazanias are not reliably perennial everywhere. UF/IFAS Extension lists a hardiness range of USDA zones 8B through 11, while University of Illinois Extension describes gazania as a tender annual. North Carolina State University Extension calls it a half-hardy perennial and notes that it is often best grown as an annual in containers or hanging baskets. These descriptions reflect differing climates and growing contexts, not a guarantee that a plant will survive winter in every location within a listed zone.

Check your local frost conditions and the cultivar’s information. Where outdoor winter survival is uncertain, treat gazanias as annuals or grow them in pots you can bring indoors before frost.

Troubleshoot poor flowering and declining plants

Few flowers are open

  • Check the weather first: flowers may not open fully on cloudy or wet days.
  • Make sure the plant receives full sun.
  • Remove spent flowers rather than waiting for them to fall away.

Plants are wilting or declining

Check for persistently wet soil and poor drainage. Overwatering can contribute to root rot, especially where water does not drain freely. Allow the soil to dry between waterings and address drainage before adding more water.

Pests or disease appear

Major pest and disease problems are not generally reported, but North Carolina State University Extension notes that powdery mildew, mealybugs, and aphids can occur. Aphids may be a concern on plants brought indoors. UF/IFAS Extension also warns that wet or poorly drained soil can make plants susceptible to root rot.

Should you fertilize gazanias?

The extension guidance cited here does not establish a universal fertilizer formula or schedule for gazanias. Prioritize full sun, drainage, restrained watering, and deadheading rather than applying a fertilizer routine without guidance for your specific plant and growing conditions.
