To make compost, combine about two to three volumes of dry “browns” with one volume of “greens,” keep the mix as damp as a wrung-out sponge, and provide air by turning it occasionally. Cover food scraps with browns to discourage pests and odors. When the pile no longer heats after mixing and the material is dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling, let it cure for at least four weeks before using it.
What compost needs
Composting is managed, oxygen-dependent decomposition by microorganisms. They need a mix of carbon-rich browns, nitrogen-rich greens, moisture, and oxygen. Too much water or too little airflow can make a pile smell; a dry pile may slow down.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends at least two to three volumes of browns for each volume of greens in a backyard pile. The ratio is a practical starting point, not a precise recipe: materials vary in moisture and size. EPA’s home composting guide explains the ingredients and basic method.
Choose a place and setup
Use an accessible, well-drained outdoor spot near a water source. Sun or shade can work. You can build a simple pile, make an enclosure from wire, wood, or cinder blocks, or use a bin or tumbler. A purchased bin is optional; choose containment that is easy to load, turn, and harvest and that helps keep pests out if that is a concern.

- Garden Gloves Included: The gloves that not only protect your hands from injury, but are also waterproof, making them easy to clean; With 4 durable ABS plastic claws for easy digging, planting and other gardening work
Vermicomposting, which uses worms, is another household method identified by EPA. This guide focuses on a backyard pile or bin, where yard browns are readily available.
What to put in the pile
Greens: nitrogen-rich materials
- Fruit and vegetable scraps
- Grass clippings
- Coffee grounds and paper filters
- Tea bags without staples
- Crushed eggshells
Browns: carbon-rich materials
- Dry leaves, plant stalks, and small twigs
- Suitable shredded, non-glossy, uncolored paper
- Brown paper bags
- Cardboard without wax, tape, or glue
- Untreated wood chips
Chop bulky or tough material into smaller pieces if you want it to break down more readily. Keep the mix balanced, and moisten dry ingredients as you add them.

- ✅Speed Up Composing Process: More advanced models use rotating to bring oxygen to the center of the bin and paddles inside the chamber to help mix and aerate the composting materials when turned. These improvements or modifications are designed for one reason: to speed the composting process.
- ✅How do Compost Tumblers work? Simple. You load them with green and brown waste from your yard and kitchen. When full, you give them time to work, in other words, heat up. Turning a compost pile mixing the organic materials and the organisms it contains with heat-producing oxygen is the traditional method of keeping the process going full steam. By turning the tumbler, the organic materials are mixed and infused with fresh oxygen.
- ✅Easy to Access Finished Compost: Just Slide the door open and take the organic fertilizer out when the compost is ready. When a check reveals the compost is complete —and this can happen in a matter of weeks —the same access that allowed you to fill the tumbler lets you empty it. Now is the time to spread the results.
- ✅Dual-Bin Design: The dual bin design takes a different approach to the continuous-use composted concept, Two bins are set side-by-side into a single rotating chamber. Thickly insulated compartments conserve the heat generating by the decaying matter, and this greatly speeds the process. This design also allows you to add food waste to one chamber while the other is composting.
- ✅Totally Organic and Money-Saving: If you're looking for a fast, convenient way to compost your kitchen throw-outs, grass clippings, and organic yard waste, our outdoor kitchen compost bin is just right for you! The Compact Compost Tumbler quickly recycles it into nutrient-rich compost.
Materials to leave out
For an ordinary backyard pile, do not add meat, fish, bones, cheese or other dairy, fats, oils, grease, pet waste, cat litter, treated or painted wood, herbicide-treated plants or grass, aggressive weeds with seeds, or diseased and pest-infested plants. EPA also advises against glossy paper, dryer lint, produce stickers, and compostable food-service ware or bags. These materials may attract animals, fail to break down reliably in a backyard pile, or require conditions a home pile may not reach. Commercial compost facilities can accept different materials, so check local rules before taking excluded items to one.
Build the pile in layers
- Make an airy base. Start with four to six inches of coarse browns, such as twigs or wood chips. This helps excess liquid drain and allows air to move through the bottom.
- Alternate greens and browns. Add roughly two to three volumes of browns for every volume of greens. Moisten dry layers as needed.
- Cover food scraps. Bury or cover fresh scraps with four to eight inches of dry leaves or other browns. This helps reduce odors and discourage pests.
- Check moisture. The combined materials should feel like a wrung-out sponge: damp, but not waterlogged. Add water if dry; add browns if the pile is too wet.
Maintain the pile and fix common problems
Turn and mix the pile occasionally to bring in oxygen and move material from the outside toward the center. Coarse browns also help maintain airflow. Watch moisture, odor, and temperature rather than relying on a fixed turning schedule.

Reinforced leg supports prevent barrel sagging, even under full load—making it the most durable outdoor compost bin for year-round composting.
- The pile is dry: Add water while turning until the material is damp throughout.
- The pile smells bad: Add dry browns and turn the pile to improve airflow. A wet, compacted pile is often short of oxygen.
- The pile is not heating: Mix in greens and turn it. A pile’s activity depends on the balance of ingredients and conditions, so lack of heat alone does not identify one cause.
EPA says a well-maintained backyard pile can reach 130–160°F. Its composting process guidance describes 131–160°F as a range for rapid decomposition and explains that temperature, oxygen, moisture, and pile structure all matter. Do not assume that a pile has been sanitized because it warmed: reducing pathogens and weed seeds depends on maintaining suitable temperatures for a period, and the requirements vary by composting method.
Know when compost is ready
Move toward harvest when the pile no longer heats after mixing and visible food scraps have disappeared. Finished compost is dark, loose, crumbly, and smells like fresh soil. Cure it for at least four weeks before use. Screen out unfinished twigs, pits, eggshells, or other larger pieces; quarter-inch hardware cloth is one option for making a simple screen.

EPA gives about three to five months as a guide for a well-maintained pile and says an untended pile may take a year. These are estimates, not deadlines: climate, pile size, materials, and care affect the time. Use the pile’s condition, not the calendar alone, to judge readiness.

Use compost as a soil amendment or as mulch. For an amendment, EPA suggests mixing two to four inches of compost into the top six to nine inches of soil. For mulch, apply a three-inch surface layer and keep it a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks. These are general EPA application suggestions; follow any directions specific to your plants or local growing conditions.
