How to Keep Weeds From Growing in Your Driveway

Keep driveway weeds under control by matching maintenance to the surface: remove growth from joints, maintain gravel, and treat prevention methods according to their limits.

To keep driveway weeds under control, first match the fix to the surface: pull weeds and maintain the joints in paved areas; keep gravel thick and rake it to limit soil buildup. Then remove new growth while it is small. Neither approach makes a driveway permanently weed-proof, because seeds and debris can keep creating new places for plants to take hold.

Start by identifying where the weeds are growing

On pavers or in pavement cracks, weeds often take root in sand, soil, or debris caught in the joints. In gravel, soil and organic material can accumulate between stones and give seeds a place to establish. The best maintenance depends on which surface you have and whether weeds are already growing.

Remove weeds from pavers and driveway cracks

Use a hand tool for existing growth

For a small patch, remove weeds mechanically before they mature or set seed. A crack weeder or pavement weeding tool can reach between pavers and into narrow joints. UC IPM also lists tools such as tricorners and Cape Cod weeders for this work. Take care not to damage the pavers or disturb a drainage system.

Check the joints after removal

Loose or missing joint material can leave room for soil and debris to collect. Replenishing or changing joint material may help, but it is not a universal solution: UC IPM describes polymeric sand as paving sand with a polymer additive that hardens while still allowing some water infiltration, but that does not establish compatibility with every paver, joint width, or permeable-paving system. Check the paver maker’s guidance or consult an experienced installer before using it.

For permeable pavers, a Hennepin County Extension response says professional sealing may reduce sprouting between pavers. Treat sealing as a possible option, not a guarantee, and confirm that the treatment will preserve the driveway’s intended drainage. Hennepin County Extension: weeds in permeable paver driveways.

Maintain a gravel driveway

Keep the gravel layer thick and rake regularly

Raking helps limit soil buildup and reduces places where weeds can root between or below gravel. Cornell University recommends keeping a thick gravel layer and raking regularly; also watch the edges, where spreading weeds may move under and through the stone. Clear debris instead of relying on fresh gravel alone

Adding gravel does not permanently prevent weeds. Leaves and other organic debris can build up in gaps, eventually supporting plant growth even in stone mulch. Remove debris when practical and pull small weeds before they establish.

Choose treatment based on whether weeds are growing or seeds are germinating

Method Best suited to What it does not do Important limitation
Hand or tool removal Existing weeds in paver joints, cracks, or gravel It does not stop new seeds from arriving Check that removal will not harm the surface or drainage design.
Pre-emergent herbicide Preventing germination of some weed seeds It does not kill weeds already growing Use only a product labeled for the specific site and purpose.
Post-emergent treatment Existing weeds, when an appropriate product is used It does not prevent later seeds from germinating Effectiveness depends on the weed and product; follow the label.
Flame weeding Some weeds in hardscape joints or gravel It does not make the area permanently weed-free Do not use near dry mulch or other combustible material.

Pre-emergent treatments target seeds as they germinate. They are not a substitute for removing established weeds, including perennial weeds such as dandelions and plantain. Extension guidance distinguishes these jobs; read Ask Extension’s guidance on home-use vinegar and weed control and use only a product whose label permits the intended site and application.

Does vinegar keep weeds from growing in driveway cracks?

A household vinegar-and-water mixture is not an established general solution for driveway weeds. In its June 15, 2024 response about permeable pavers, Hennepin County Extension Master Gardener Amy J. stated: “There is no evidence that vinegar and water will manage weeds and grass.” Read the Extension response.

Horticultural vinegar is a different, stronger product. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes it as a 20% acetic acid solution—four times stronger than household vinegar. It works by contact, damaging the plant tissue it touches, and is mainly useful on young annual weeds. Established perennial weeds may regrow because contact treatment does not reliably kill the root system.

Do not assume a product is harmless because it is described as natural. Maine Extension advises using protective gear such as rubber gloves and eye protection, avoiding inhalation, ingestion, and skin or eye contact, and following the product label carefully. As Jonathan Foster of University of Maine Cooperative Extension wrote on April 22, 2024: “I say this to combat any notions that ‘natural’ or ‘non-toxic’ herbicides aren’t actually chemical pesticides (they are, by legal definition), and to stress the importance of always reading carefully and following conscientiously all instructions on the label.” University of Maine Extension’s guidance on horticultural vinegar.

Use flame weeding cautiously

University of New Hampshire Extension lists flame weeding as an option for some hardscape weeds and gravel driveways. It is not appropriate around dry mulch or other combustible material, and it still will not prevent future seeds from establishing. UNH Extension’s weed-management Q&A.

Keep up with small, recurring growth

  1. Inspect the joints, cracks, gravel, and edges. Look for seedlings and places where soil or debris is collecting.
  2. Remove weeds while they are small. Use a hand tool where practical, taking care around pavers and drainage features.
  3. Restore the surface appropriately. Keep gravel thick and raked; for pavers, check whether joint maintenance or professional sealing is compatible with the system.
  4. Use treatments only for the job they are intended to do. Pre-emergents address germinating seeds; existing weeds need removal or an appropriate post-emergent method.
  5. Repeat inspections. Windblown seeds and organic debris can create new growing sites over time.

For additional non-chemical approaches, see University of Maryland Extension’s guide to managing weeds without chemicals.
