To get rid of slime, lift off the bulk first, then treat the affected surface with a method suited to its material. On carpet, use a small amount of a tested spot-treatment solution, blot gently rather than scrub, rinse with cold water, and blot dry. For clothes, upholstery, and hair, follow the material’s care instructions; a carpet-cleaning method is not automatically safe for them.
Before you start: lift, identify, and test
- Remove the bulk. Use a spoon or blunt edge to lift slime without grinding it into fibers. Avoid rubbing, which can spread the mess or work it deeper.
- Identify the surface and its care requirements. Carpet, washable clothing, upholstery, and hair need different approaches. Check garment or furniture care instructions before applying a cleaner.
- Test first. Apply a small amount of the proposed solution to an inconspicuous area and check for color transfer or damage before treating the visible stain.
How to get slime out of carpet
For general carpet spot treatment, the Carpet and Rug Institute recommends testing a solution first, applying a small amount to a white cloth, and working gently from the spill’s outer edge toward the center. Do not rub. Once the slime is removed, rinse the area with cold water and blot it dry. Leftover detergent can attract soil and cause the spot to resoil quickly. Its spot-removal guidance advises considering a professional cleaner for stubborn spills.
Optional: use compatible carpet-cleaning equipment
BISSELL’s manufacturer guide, How to Remove Slime from Carpet, describes a machine-based approach using a compatible Revolution HydroSteam Pet Carpet Cleaner with BISSELL PET PRO OXY Urine Eliminator formula. Its procedure includes pretreating, making cleaning passes, repeating if needed, extracting remaining liquid, and air drying. This is BISSELL’s advice for its equipment and formula—not an independent comparison or a requirement to buy a machine.
BISSELL also discusses diluted vinegar and other DIY options, but cautions that home methods are not guaranteed and may leave residue or fail to address all glue, dye, and borate-related messes. Its guide describes peroxide and rubbing-alcohol approaches as variable and calls for an inconspicuous-area test; peroxide can discolor carpet. Do not assume these alternatives are safe for every carpet. BISSELL Principal Chemist Jay Kellis explains the company’s peroxide-containing formulas this way: “Our peroxide-containing formulas also have cleaning boosters and wetting agents, which allow the hydrogen peroxide to penetrate soils in a way peroxide alone would.” That explanation concerns BISSELL formulas and should not be generalized to every peroxide cleaner.

How to get slime out of washable clothes
Check the garment’s care label and remove as much slime as possible before laundering. Do not put a garment in the washing machine with large pieces of slime still attached. There is no single slime-removal chemistry established here as suitable for every textile, so avoid applying a carpet treatment or an aggressive cleaner without confirming it is appropriate for the fabric.
HGTV’s guide, How to Get Slime Out of Carpet and Clothes | 7 Ways to Clean Slime Off Fabric, reports that its authors tested seven methods, including on a white T-shirt and carpet. Treat those observations as that publisher’s described test, not as a universal fabric-care rule.

How to remove slime from upholstery
Use only a cleaner labeled as appropriate for the specific upholstery fabric. Test it in a hidden spot, then blot gently if the test shows no damage. Avoid scrubbing, which can spread the stain or affect the fabric. Carpet spot-removal advice is not upholstery-specific certification; for delicate or persistent upholstery stains, consult a professional cleaner.
