For bank fishing, a wooden rod holder is usually a stake with a rod-rest notch or cradle—not a freestanding indoor rack. Make the stake fit your rod and the bank, test it close at hand before relying on it, and keep the rod under the control required by local rules. If you want to store rods at home, a separate rack design is more appropriate.
Choose a bank holder or a home rack
A bank-side holder needs to stay planted in soil and support a rod at a useful angle. A home rack holds rods upright or horizontally in a stable indoor location. Those are different jobs: the detailed wooden plan from Baird Brothers is a freestanding storage rack for ten rods, not a lake-bank stake.

Plan a simple wooden bank stake
The following is an adaptable build approach, not a field-tested specification. The source plans establish details for indoor storage, not stake dimensions or bank-holder stability. Choose stock and proportions for your rod and site rather than treating any measurement as universally safe.
Decide how the rod will rest
A simple holder can use a V-shaped notch near the top of a stake, with a smooth crosspiece or shallow cradle to keep the rod from sliding sideways. Shape the contact area to the rod handle, not the blank, and avoid a tight slot that can trap or pinch the rod. If you plan to leave the rod unattended, a more secure cradle may help prevent it falling, but it does not replace staying within legal control.

Choose wood and stake proportions
Use sound, straight-grained lumber without splits at the notch or point. The stake must be long enough to reach firm ground while leaving the rest at a convenient height; how much embedment is needed varies with soil, rod weight, wind and fish pull. The reviewed plans do not quantify those forces or validate a particular stake length or thickness.
For ground insertion, taper the lower end enough to enter the soil without creating a fragile point. Avoid driving on a brittle notch or on a crosspiece that could split. If the bank is rocky, loose, saturated, or steep, a stake may not hold reliably; reposition or use a different support rather than forcing it.

Fit the cradle to your equipment
Measure the rod handle where it will rest and check the reel’s clearance through the full range of movement. Leave enough space that the reel does not hit the stake or ground, and ensure the rod can be lifted out smoothly. A hole or notch that works for one handle or reel may not fit another. The storage guidance from Take Me Fishing likewise recommends basing spacing on reel size.
Build and finish the holder
- Mark the rod rest. Set the rod against the stake at the angle you want. Mark the contact point and the location of any retaining crosspiece, checking reel clearance before cutting.
- Cut and smooth the stake. Shape the lower end for soil insertion and cut the upper notch or cradle. Round exposed corners and sand every rod-contact edge until smooth; rough edges can splinter or scratch equipment.
- Attach a retaining piece if needed. Clamp the stake securely and fasten the crosspiece with exterior-suitable screws. Predrill near board ends to reduce splitting. Keep fasteners flush or recessed so metal cannot contact the rod or hand.
- Check fit before finishing. Place the rod in the holder and lift it out several times. Check that it rests without rocking, the reel clears, and no sharp edge catches line or clothing.
- Protect and inspect the wood. Use a finish rated for the exposure you expect, following its label for application and curing. The polyurethane in Baird Brothers’ indoor-rack plan is not proof that the plan—or an unspecified finish—will withstand prolonged soil and weather exposure. Inspect the stake for splitting, loosened joints, or softening before use.
Set it up safely at the lake
- Press the stake into firm ground and test it gently before placing a rod in it. If it shifts, tilts, or pulls free, do not trust it with a rod near water.
- Keep the holder away from walkways, other anglers’ lines, and places where a rod could be pulled into the water.
- Wind, soft soil, heavy tackle, and a strong fish can change stability. Stay close enough to respond and do not treat a holder as an unattended-rod safeguard.
- Check the rules where you fish. In England and Wales, GOV.UK’s freshwater rod-fishing guidance says rod limits depend on the water and fish, directs anglers to local byelaws, and says a rod and line cannot be left unattended or beyond sufficient control. This guidance is specific to England and Wales; other locations have their own rules.
When the indoor rack plan is the better fit
If your goal is organizing rods at home, Baird Brothers’ plan gives concrete dimensions and materials. It calls for 8 feet of 1×12 red oak and 4 feet of 1×6 red oak, plus wood glue, pocket-hole screws, wax and wood button plugs. Its listed tools include a saw, drill or screw gun, sander, clamps, square, and 1-inch and 1 3/8-inch Forstner bits.

The rack has 36-inch side panels, a 19-by-10-inch bottom shelf, a 19-by-5 1/2-inch top shelf, and a 19-by-5 1/2-inch center support. The top shelf receives ten full holes drilled with a 1-inch Forstner bit; the bottom shelf receives ten shallow recesses, 5/16 inch deep, drilled with a 1 3/8-inch Forstner bit. Baird specifies hole positions in its plan, but advises measuring and adjusting for the rods and reels being stored.
The assembly uses glue and screws, a center support, sanding, softened edges, small wood buttons at ground-contact points, and a couple of polyurethane coats. These are storage-rack instructions, not a lake-side stake design. Baird’s companion project page describes the plans as customizable; listed products can change.
