Water from the top so gravity carries moisture down through the levels. This guide covers the simple soil-filled design; it is not a recirculating hydroponic system.
Materials and tools
Gather the following before cutting. The basic design described by the Wells County Public Library guide uses at least four same-size plastic water bottles.
- At least four bottles of the same size
- Potting soil or another suitable growing medium
- Germinated seeds or small young plants
- Scissors or a knife for cutting the bottles
- A pushpin or nail for making drainage holes
- String or wire to secure the tower to a support
- Optional gravel, if desired for the base
Choose a support that will keep the assembled tower upright. Keep it a manageable height so you can secure it and water it safely. A bottle tower has limited soil volume in each pocket, so use plants that can grow in that space. Kansas State University Extension’s general guidance for tower planters is to choose one that holds ample soil for roots and allows easy watering and fertilizing; that advice does not validate every bottle configuration (Kansas State University Extension, April 2026).
Build the bottle tower
- Make the base. Remove the top of one bottle. Punch drainage holes near its bottom, then cut small planting windows into its sides. Keep the windows modest so the soil can stay inside. Fill the base with potting soil, leaving some space at the top.
- Prepare the middle levels. For each additional level, remove the cap and cut off the bottle bottom. Cut side planting windows, leaving each window’s lower edge intact to help hold the growing medium. Set the prepared bottle onto the level below and add soil as you build upward.
- Add a top funnel. Cut the top portion from another bottle, remove its cap, and insert the neck into the soil at the tower’s top. This provides an opening for water to enter the tower.
- Secure the structure. Tie the assembled tower to its support with string or wire. Check that it stays upright before adding plants or water.
- Plant the pockets. Place germinated seeds or small young plants through the planting windows. Avoid crowding pockets with plants that will outgrow the available soil.
- Water and check drainage. Pour water into the top funnel and watch whether it moves down through the levels. Water should be able to drain rather than collect in the lower bottles.
The bottle cuts and assembly above follow the library’s DIY instructions. Use care with sharp tools, and make the drainage openings before filling the tower.

Choose a watering setup
The simplest arrangement is gravity-fed watering: add water at the top and let it move downward through the stacked bottles. The library guide also describes using a separate bottle with a small hole in its cap as a slow-drip reservoir. Neither design comes with a proven watering interval or guaranteed yield, so check the soil and drainage instead of relying on a fixed schedule.
A more involved bottle-based option in the University of the Fraser Valley Agriculture Centre of Excellence’s Low-Tech Urban Agriculture Handbook uses a support pole, tubing, and emitters. That requires more parts and assembly than the simple stacked-bottle tower. The instructions for a separate hydroponic tower, such as the one described by North Carolina State University’s Plants for Human Health Institute, should not be treated as directions for this soil-filled bottle build.

Use suitable materials for edible plants
If you plan to grow food, pay attention to the materials used in a modified tower. Oklahoma State University Extension advises using food-grade material for tower construction (Building a Vertical Hydroponic Tower). This is a caution for material selection, not a blanket finding that every reused bottle, coating, or construction material is safe for edible crops.
Use potting soil or an appropriate growing medium that suits the plants you choose. You do not need to buy a tower kit: the basic design uses reused bottles, soil, plants, and simple tools.
