You can plan a multitool around the jobs you actually do, but a safe homemade version is more than a collection of useful implements. Its layout, pivots and method of keeping each tool open—or safely stowed—are central to whether it works reliably. The available design descriptions explain common architectures; they are not tested DIY plans. Treat this as a design guide, not a fabrication or safety specification.
Start with the jobs the tool must do
Write down the tasks you expect to handle, then rank the functions that matter most. For a construction or repair kit, that might mean driving a fastener, gripping a small part or making a cut. Choose functions from your own work rather than trying to fit every possible implement into one handle.
One pliers-based multitool patent describes examples including knife blades, can openers, screwdrivers, files, scissors and saw blades. These are examples of possible functions, not a recommended kit or a guarantee that any particular combination will fit. See US6006385A.
Set priorities before choosing a layout
- Core functions: Identify the few implements you expect to use regularly.
- Occasional functions: Include these only if their added bulk and complexity make sense for your needs.
- Deployment: Consider whether each implement can be opened and used without obstructing the others.
- Stowage: Plan how every implement returns to a secure, non-exposed position.
Choose a design concept
Two broad arrangements appear in the cited patents. One stores implements in the handles of pliers; another uses separate carrying plates with pivoting tool modules. These are concepts to help frame a design decision, not verified instructions for reproducing either design.

| Design concept | How it is arranged | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Pliers-based handles | Opposing plier jaws and handles form the main tool; additional implements can be carried in or attached to the handles. The patent gives examples of fold-out tools and a positional locking arrangement. Source: US6006385A. | Decide which handle-carried implements you need and how each will deploy, lock and stow. |
| Modular pivoting plates | An elongate carrying plate holds a pivoting tool blade; axial fasteners can join multiple modules into different configurations. Source: EP1142676A1. | Think about the intended configuration and how modules would be retained. The patent description does not establish that off-the-shelf parts are compatible. |
Compactness and the number of useful functions can pull in different directions. More implements may add options, but the cited descriptions provide no measured comparison of weight, strength, cost or durability. Choose a configuration based on your priorities rather than assuming that more functions make a better tool.
Make retention and safe stowage central
A pivoting implement must stay in its intended position while being used and return to a secure position when stowed. A patent describing a locking multipurpose driver discusses the possibility of a screwdriver shaft moving or closing unintentionally during use. That is a design concern, not a general safety standard or proof that a homemade lock will work. See US20230364746A1.

- Account for the open and closed positions of each implement.
- Consider whether an implement could move unexpectedly while force is applied.
- Ensure the intended stowed position does not leave an exposed edge or obstruct another tool.
- Do not assume a pivot, spring or locking feature is safe simply because it appears in a patent drawing or description.
Know what the design references can—and cannot—tell you
The cited patents describe design ideas: pliers with handle-carried implements, modular plates with pivots, and a locking driver. They do not provide a validated home-build procedure, a complete bill of materials, verified dimensions or materials, or a safe load rating. They also do not establish that a particular homemade configuration will be reliable.
A forum post titled “A DIY multitool I’m working on” includes one person’s desired combination of pliers, several screwdriver types and a durable knife. That is anecdotal inspiration, not evidence of a broadly suitable tool or a tested design. Read the discussion.

For a finished tool you can use rather than a fabrication project, consider a commercially manufactured pliers-based multitool. Do not assume a ready-made model is suitable for modification: check its construction and warranty terms before altering it. A manufacturer’s history describes how Tim Leatherman developed a pliers-based multipurpose-tool idea into a prototype and patent process, but that history is not a build guide. The Leatherman Story.
