Choose which kind of balloon fishing pole you mean
The direct match for this craft is BalloonHQ’s balloon-twisting “Fish on a Fishing Pole Game.” It uses modeling balloons and magnets to make a toy pole and fish. A simpler magnetic game uses a stick, string, magnet, and paper-clip fish. Neither is fishing equipment. A balloon float attached to fishing line for angling is a different setup, and its safe use and applicable rules depend on the location and equipment.

Make the balloon-animal fishing pole
BalloonHQ’s tutorial uses a gray or silver 260 modeling balloon for the pole, clear 260 balloons for the line, button magnets, balloon fish, and a marker for details. A 260 is a long modeling balloon. The instructions use several measured twists, but do not specify one total finished pole or line length. Gather the materials
- One gray or silver 260 modeling balloon for the pole
- Clear 260 modeling balloons for the fishing line
- Small button magnets for the line and fish
- Materials for balloon fish, plus a marker for details
Twist the rod and attach the line
- Inflate the gray or silver 260 most of the way, leaving a short uninflated tail.
- Twist the balloon to form the handle and the pole’s loop details. BalloonHQ specifies a handle of about 6–7 inches, a pinch twist of about 1 inch, and a loop of about 3 inches as part of its illustrated construction.
- Put a button magnet into a clear 260 balloon and let it settle at the tip to form the magnetic end of the line.
- Join two clear 260 balloons if you want the longer line shown in the tutorial, then tie the line to the end of the pole.
Make fish and play
Build the balloon fish around magnets so they can be caught by the magnetic line, and use a marker for details. Place the fish on a table or floor. Lower the line until its magnet meets a fish’s magnet, then lift the fish from the surface.

Make a simpler stick-and-string version
If balloon twisting is not practical, make a basic magnetic fishing game instead. KiwiCo describes this activity for ages 3–8; that age range is the activity’s description, not a substitute for judging whether a particular child can safely handle the small parts.

Assembly and play
- Tie one end of the string to the stick and reinforce the attachment with tape.
- Tie a magnet to the free end of the string.
- Cut out and decorate paper fish, then attach a paper clip to each fish.
- Spread the fish on the ground and use the magnet to pick them up.

What about balloons filled with beans?
Hellokids describes a separate balloon-fish game: put dry beans inside inflated balloons, then add paper fins and tails. The beans help the fish sit belly-down in water. Both magnetic versions use small parts: button magnets in the balloon-animal game, and a magnet and paper clips in the simpler one. KiwiCo specifically cautions that children should be old enough not to swallow magnets. Supervise construction and play as appropriate for the child, keep loose magnets and other small parts out of reach of children who may swallow them, and collect broken balloon fragments. Have an adult help with scissors or balloon-tying tools when appropriate for the child and tool.
