E1 does not mean the same thing on every treadmill. On some models it indicates a communication problem between the console and electronics; on others, it means the machine has lost speed feedback. Identify the make and exact model, then use its manual or official support page before trying a repair. A speed sensor is one possible cause on certain machines, not a universal fix.
What does E1 mean on my treadmill?
The code is model-dependent. Decathlon describes E1 on selected models as a data or connection problem between the console and electronic card. Johnson/Horizon materials associate E1 on covered models with missing speed-sensor feedback. Those definitions should not be applied to other treadmills without confirmation from their manufacturer.
Before troubleshooting, record the make and exact model. Note when the code appears—immediately, after the belt runs briefly, or during a workout—and whether the belt does not move, stops, or moves erratically. Lifespan Fitness notes that belt behavior before the error can help narrow down the cause: Lifespan Fitness support: E1 message.
Start with safe checks while the treadmill is off
Switch off and unplug the treadmill before inspecting accessible parts. Johnson/Horizon service guidance begins mechanical checks with power off and advises correcting binding or other abnormal movement before switching the machine on again: Johnson Fitness troubleshooting guide.

- Check that the running belt is free of obstructions and moves freely as described in your manual. Do not force it if movement is restricted.
- Look for obvious belt misalignment or incorrect tension; use only the adjustment procedure specified for your model.
- Check that accessible rollers and the motor shaft or flywheel do not bind, grind, or feel obstructed. Stop if you notice abnormal noise or resistance.
- Check belt and deck lubrication against the manual. Use only the specified lubricant and application instructions.
These checks can identify mechanical drag or an obstruction that may contribute to a drive interruption. They do not establish that a mechanical issue is the cause of every E1 code.
Inspect only the connections the manual identifies
A loose, pinched, cut, or damaged wire can interrupt console communication or speed feedback. With the treadmill unplugged, inspect only connections you can reach safely and that the exact model’s instructions tell you to check. Do not open a powered machine or probe live circuits.

Decathlon T900B and T900C
For the T900B, Decathlon says E1 means the electronic card or console is not receiving data. Its troubleshooting instructions call for checking the specified connection for a bent pin or cut wire: Decathlon T900B troubleshooting.
For the T900C version identified as “From: October 2019,” Decathlon likewise describes a board-to-console data issue and directs users to inspect console-cable connections for bent pins or cut wires: Decathlon T900C troubleshooting. Follow the instructions for your model rather than transferring these checks to a different treadmill.

Johnson/Horizon models covered by the E1 bulletin
For machines covered by its E1/no-belt-movement bulletin, Horizon says the software may stop the treadmill shortly after startup if it does not detect a speed-sensor signal. The bulletin recommends checking sensor wiring for a loose connection, pinch, or cut; sensor position depends on the model. The bulletin was prepared on April 26, 2016, and shows a revision date of May 4, 2022: Horizon E1 error/no belt movement bulletin.
When a speed sensor may be involved
Consider the sensor only if the troubleshooting information for your exact treadmill links E1 or loss of speed feedback to that component. Johnson’s no-speed-feedback guide describes removing and cleaning the sensor, then retesting; if the sensor remains clean and connected but still does not work, the guide lists replacement as the next step. It also identifies drive-system interruption and belt-speed lag as other troubleshooting branches. These service instructions do not make sensor failure the explanation for every E1 code.

Do not buy a generic part based on the error code alone. Confirm the treadmill’s model and sensor type, and verify the diagnosis before ordering a replacement speed sensor for your treadmill model. If you cannot safely access or test the sensor using the manufacturer’s user instructions, ask the manufacturer or a qualified technician to do it.

If the basic checks and model-specific accessible connection inspection do not resolve the error, stop rather than moving on to internal electrical diagnosis. Removing guards, testing cables, adjusting a control board, or replacing a motor or board may require service procedures and specialist skills. Manufacturer guides include continuity, voltage, and board-level checks, but they are not a universal homeowner repair recipe. Contact the treadmill manufacturer or a qualified treadmill technician, and provide the model number, when E1 appears, and what the belt does before it stops.
