How to Choose the Right Generator Size for Your Wattage Needs

Add the running watts of loads you’ll use together, account for the largest relevant startup surge, and verify the generator’s ratings, outlets, and voltage.

Choose a generator by adding the running watts of the appliances and circuits you expect to use at the same time, then accounting for the largest startup surge that could occur while those loads are running. Compare that demand with the generator’s continuous output and its temporary starting capacity. For a home standby system or a complex mix of loads, use a professional load analysis rather than relying on square footage or a generic chart.

What size generator do you need?

There is no single generator size that fits every house or job. Start with what you actually need powered: separate essential loads from optional ones, and decide which items may operate concurrently. Two homes of similar size can have very different demands depending on their heating and cooling equipment, pumps, and electric appliances.

Generac recommends listing essential loads, identifying appliances with high starting wattage, and having a professional complete a home load analysis. That is manufacturer guidance, not a universal engineering standard. Its home generator sizing guide describes essential-circuit coverage such as refrigeration, lights, a well pump, and critical outlets, as well as broader coverage that may include HVAC and other high-draw systems. Those labels alone do not establish the generator capacity you need; size from the actual loads.

Running watts and starting watts: what the ratings mean

  • Running watts (also called rated or continuous watts) are the power an appliance needs while operating. Add the running watts of the loads you expect to use together.
  • Starting watts or surge watts are brief extra capacity that some equipment needs at startup. Motors and compressors—including those in air conditioners, refrigerators, and pumps—may require more power to start than to keep running.
  • Generator output has to cover both the ongoing demand and the relevant startup event. Check the specific generator’s continuous output and temporary starting capability; an advertised total wattage does not mean an individual outlet can supply that entire amount.

Find each appliance’s ratings on its nameplate or in the manufacturer’s documentation. Check the exact model where possible: a chart’s range is an estimate, not a promise about your appliance.

Calculate the load you plan to run together

  1. Make a simultaneous-use list. Include only the circuits and appliances you need during the outage or job. Mark optional high-draw loads you can switch off when necessary.
  2. Record running and starting watts. Use nameplates or manufacturer specifications. For equipment with a motor or compressor, look for both figures; if the information is unclear, ask the appliance manufacturer or a qualified professional.
  3. Add the running watts. Total the running demand of the appliances expected to operate at once.
  4. Allow for the highest relevant startup event. Add the largest additional starting demand that could occur while the other listed loads are already running. Do not add every appliance’s maximum surge as if all motors must start simultaneously, but do not assume startup events will never overlap unless you have a load-management plan.
  5. Check the generator and connection requirements. Compare the resulting demand with both generator ratings, then confirm voltage and receptacles suit the loads and the specific unit’s documentation.

Generac’s 2024 buyer-guide worksheet illustrates the arithmetic as “4,250 Total Running Watts + 2350 Highest Starting Watts = 6600 Total Watts Needed.” It presents this as an approximation to narrow down generator size, alongside a 7.5 kW example unit—not as a recommendation for every home or a substitute for a detailed estimate. See the Generac wattage worksheet.

Use wattage charts as estimates, not appliance specifications

Appliance Running watts in Champion’s chart Starting watts in Champion’s chart
Refrigerator 150–400 W 800–1,200 W
2-ton central air conditioner 2,000–2,500 W 3,500–4,500 W
Half-horsepower well pump 750–1,000 W 1,500–2,000 W

These are ranges published in Champion Power Equipment’s generator wattage chart, not measurements of your equipment. Square-footage rules and appliance lists can help screen options, but actual loads determine the useful capacity.

Choose between essential-circuit and broader home backup

Essential-circuit backup limits the loads you power—for example, refrigeration, lighting, a well pump, and selected outlets. Broader home coverage may include HVAC and other high-demand systems, which can substantially change the required output. Decide which circuits matter, what can run at once, and whether loads can be managed; then size the generator against those conditions.

A portable generator and a permanent standby system also differ in how they are operated and connected. Compare the specific unit’s continuous and starting output, voltage and receptacles, and the connection method—not just its advertised wattage. Portable-generator power limits and outlet ratings can affect what you can run from a particular unit; Generac explains this distinction in its portable generator power-limits guidance. For a standby installation, complex panel, or uncertain load mix, request a site-specific load analysis instead of inferring capacity from a product label.

Portable generator safety is separate from sizing

A correctly sized portable generator can still cause fatal carbon-monoxide poisoning or electrocution if it is used or connected incorrectly. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says never to operate one inside a home or garage, even with doors and windows open. Run it outdoors at least 20 feet from the home, direct exhaust away from buildings and openings, and use battery-operated CO alarms or alarms with battery backup. See the CPSC Carbon Monoxide Information Center.
