The steps do not apply to every Samsung washer: Samsung says top-load models do not have this same pump filter, and filter locations and procedures vary by model.
Identify the filter before you start
Samsung calls the front-load component a pump filter, debris filter, or drain filter. It catches lint and other debris before they enter the washer’s drain system. Samsung US describes its purpose and cleaning procedure.
Do not assume your washer has a front-bottom pump-filter panel. Samsung says its top-load washers do not have the same pump filter found on front-load models. Some washers have other components, such as a lint filter or water-inlet mesh filter; those are different parts, and their locations and cleaning methods depend on the model. Check the user manual for the full model number before opening or removing anything. Samsung Australia’s guidance is specifically for Australian models.
What to gather and how to prepare
- A small toothbrush or another soft-bristle brush.
- Towels and a shallow container to catch residual water.
- Access to the washer’s user manual if the panel, hose, or filter does not match the steps below.
Turn the washer off and unplug it before cleaning. If it has just finished a hot cycle, wait one hour so the water can cool; water left inside may be very hot. Place towels and a container below the access area before opening the panel. Samsung Canada’s instructions also describe the tools and water-draining steps.

Clean the front-load pump filter
- Open the access panel. Find the pump-filter panel near the lower front of the washer. Its position and design can vary by model.
- Drain the remaining water. Locate the emergency rubber drain hose behind the panel. Hold the hose, remove its cap, and let the water drain into your container. Replace the cap after draining to help prevent spills while you handle the filter.
- Remove the filter. Turn it counterclockwise. Some Samsung models use a push-in-and-turn action, similar to a bottle cap, so follow your model’s manual if the filter does not release with a simple turn. Do not force it.
- Brush away debris and inspect the housing. Use a small toothbrush or similar soft-bristle brush to remove dirt and lint from the filter. Check the drain-pump impeller visible inside the housing.
- Reinstall the parts. Put the filter back and turn it clockwise until secure, following the position and method specified for your washer. Firmly replace the drain-hose cap, return the hose to its retaining clip, and close the panel.
If your washer’s arrangement differs from these steps, stop and consult the manual for the full model number rather than guessing. Samsung’s US instructions and Canadian instructions both emphasize model-specific guidance.
How often to clean it
Samsung’s recommendations differ by region, so use the guidance for your model and market rather than treating one interval as universal.

A clogged filter can contribute to poor drainage, but cleaning it does not establish the cause of every washer problem. Samsung Ireland associates debris-filter buildup with symptoms such as wet clothes after a cycle, longer cycle time, spin trouble, noise, or vibration. Samsung also explains that a washer attempts to drain before spinning, so a drain problem can prevent the spin step.
