An ice fishing house—also called a hut, shack, or fish house—is a small shelter built around a floor, framed walls, and a roof. A published Co-op plan offers a practical build sequence: assemble the floor and skids, frame and sheath the walls, raise them, add the roof, then fit the door, bench, and optional window. Treat its dimensions and materials as one design, not a universal specification: adapt the build to your intended transport, local conditions, and applicable codes.
Plan the shelter before cutting lumber
Start by deciding how the finished hut will be used and moved. The Co-op plan is for a small-project shelter with skids; the source does not establish that its design is suitable for every footprint, occupant capacity, climate, towing arrangement, or lake. Check local building-code requirements and permits, and ask a building-code official or qualified expert whether the materials and methods suit your site and use.
- Transport and storage: The example plan uses skids arranged so they can be removed if they freeze into the ice. A wheeled fish house is a different form of shelter and may face different rules.
- Footprint and use: Set size and layout around the intended fishing use; the plan does not provide a universal size or capacity recommendation.
- Openings and insulation: Decide whether a window is useful and whether you want insulation in the wall, floor-joist, or rafter cavities.
- Local approval: The plan cautions: “Check with a building-code official or a building expert to make sure that the materials and construction methods shown meet local codes and conditions and are suitable to your situation.”
Plan and material details below describe the Co-op design; they are not engineered guidance for other structures.
Build the floor, walls, and roof
- Assemble the floor platform and skids. Follow the plan’s floor layout and arrange the skids so they can be removed if they freeze into the ice.
- Frame and sheath the walls. Build and sheath the rear, side, and front wall sections as shown in the plan.
- Stand the walls. Raise the wall sections with a helper or temporary bracing, then secure them according to the plan.
- Install rafters and roof sheathing. Complete the roof framing and cover it as the design specifies.
- Assemble and hang the door. Fit the door and its hardware after the main enclosure is framed.
- Fit the bench and optional window panel. The plan includes a bench and an optional window panel; its window material options are clear acrylic or polycarbonate.
The plan’s construction materials include framing lumber, sheathing, deck screws, hinges, and door hardware. Use the plan’s own details for its design, and have local suitability assessed rather than assuming those materials or methods meet requirements everywhere.

- 【60-Second Pop-Up Hub Setup – Instant Shelter in Extreme Cold】 Beat the cold before it beats you. Our innovative hub-style pop-up mechanism lets you this insulated ice fishing tent in under 60 seconds—no poles to thread, no complex assembly, just pull and it's ready. When the fishing's done, it collapses just as quickly into a compact carry bag for easy transport. Spend less time freezing on the ice and more time dropping lines with your fishing buddies.
- 【Insulated Thermal Protection – Stays Warm Down to -30°C】 Fish longer and stay warmer with our double-layer insulated fabric that traps heat inside and blocks biting cold air. Unlike single-layer shelters that lose warmth quickly, this thermal ice hut effectively retains body heat and heater warmth (when used), keeping you comfortable even when temperatures plummet to -30°C. The windproof construction prevents drafts from stealing your warmth
- 【Spacious 6x6 FT Interior】 Bring the whole crew. With a roomy 11.6 x 6.5 x 6 ft interior, this ice fishing shelter comfortably accommodates 6 to 8 adults along with chairs, fishing rods, tackle boxes, coolers, and even a portable heater. The generous floor space lets everyone spread out without constantly bumping elbows. Whether you're with a group of friends or taking the family ice fishing, there's ample room to fish, relax, and enjoy the winter adventure together.
- 【Windproof, Durable & Built for Ice Conditions】 Engineered for the harshest winter environments. The full-metal hub system provides superior load-bearing strength and wind resistance compared to plastic hubs that can crack in extreme cold. Heavy-duty Oxford fabric with wear-resistant zippers resists tearing from ice and gear, while self-tapping ice anchors secure the shelter to the ice surface in seconds. This ice shanty stays firmly planted even when the wind howls across the frozen lake.
- 【Ventilation, Visibility & Safety Features】 Stay comfortable and safe throughout your ice fishing trip. Built-in vents help regulate temperature and reduce condensation, keeping the interior fresh even with multiple occupants. Detachable double-layer windows let you control light and ventilation while providing clear views of tip-ups outside. Double-zippered doors allow easy entry and exit, while reflective strips enhance night visibility—a critical safety feature for ice anglers who fish throug
Choose insulation and window options
The Co-op plan includes rigid foam insulation in the bench and says wall, floor-joist, and rafter cavities may also be insulated if desired. It does not specify a universal insulation thickness or rating. Rigid foam insulation board is therefore one material choice for the plan’s optional insulation—not a prescribed product specification for every hut.
The shelter can be built with or without windows. If adding the plan’s window panel, it identifies clear acrylic or polycarbonate as options. Choose these features to suit the intended use and construction, rather than assuming either is required.

Check shelter rules where you will fish
Ice-shelter requirements are jurisdiction-specific. The following examples apply only in the named states; confirm current rules for the exact waters and season before building or placing a shelter.
Minnesota
The Minnesota DNR says all non-portable shelters, including wheeled fish houses, must be licensed. Its rules also include exterior identification requirements, overnight reflectors, restrictions on disposing of garbage, sewage, or wastewater on the ice, and season-specific shelter-removal deadlines. The DNR’s 2026 guidance lists inland removal dates of March 2 south of its described line and March 16 north of it, as well as deadlines for border waters. Its listed annual license fees are $15 for residents and $37 for non-residents, excluding possible issuing fees. Check the Minnesota DNR shelter rules for the current season, exact waters, and applicable fees.

Iowa
Iowa DNR guidance says unattended shelters on ice or state-owned land must display specified owner information. Shelters must be removed before ice melt or March 1, whichever comes first. The agency also advises checking changing ice conditions and lists safety equipment including ice picks, a life jacket, and a floating safety rope. These rules apply to Iowa; see Iowa DNR ice-fishing guidance rather than applying them to other states.

Ice conditions can change, so assess conditions for the specific location and time rather than treating a shelter or a prior trip as proof that ice is safe. Iowa DNR’s guidance lists ice picks, a life jacket, and a floating safety rope among recommended safety equipment. The Minnesota DNR identifies carbon monoxide from propane heaters as an inherent ice-fishing danger and recommends learning from an experienced angler. The cited hut plan does not provide a complete heater, ventilation, alarm, or fuel-system design. Follow the heater manufacturer’s current instructions and authoritative safety guidance; do not infer a safe setup from the hut framing plan.
