Prepare a garden pond for winter by clearing decaying leaves and plants, protecting aquatic plants according to their cold hardiness, and checking the pond periodically. In ponds that stay ice-covered, oxygen can become a concern; the right response depends on the pond’s depth and design, its fish and plants, and local freeze conditions.
Why winter can be hard on a pond
Winterkill is often linked to low dissolved oxygen. Ice limits exchange with the air, and snow or thick ice blocks light. That reduces photosynthesis while fish, other aquatic life, and decomposition continue to use oxygen. The risk varies with pond conditions rather than following one rule for every garden pond.
Penn State Extension notes that larger pond volume is less prone to winterkill. Accumulated leaves and dead plants, dense summer vegetation, and a high fish population can increase oxygen demand or risk. University of Illinois Extension says plants and algae may account for as much as 70–90% of dissolved oxygen in the ponds discussed in its 2025 guidance; that figure should not be assumed for every pond. The same guidance describes fish becoming stressed at 5 ppm dissolved oxygen, a contextual figure rather than a universal threshold for all species and conditions.
What to do before winter
Remove material that will decay
Clear fallen leaves and dying plant material, especially if fish live in the pond. As this material breaks down underwater, it contributes to oxygen demand. Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends cleaning the pond and managing plants as part of winter preparation.

- Extended Power Cord: Benefit from the flexibility of placement with TURBRO's pond de-icer, thanks to its generous 32.8ft power cord. Reach further to meet your specific needs with ease.
- Sturdy Stainless Steel Build: Crafted from anti-rust and anti-corrosive stainless steel, the entire casing provides a strong watertight seal, safeguarding internal components from water. Additionally, it efficiently distributes heat, accelerating the ice-melting process for faster results.
- Intuitive Monitoring: Stay informed about the de-icer's status with the indicator light. A red glow signals active heating, while green signals a pause in heating, providing effortless monitoring.
Sort plants by cold hardiness
Plant care depends on the species and the conditions in your area. In its 2026 review, Virginia Cooperative Extension says hardy water lilies, cattails, sedges, and rushes can be placed at the pond bottom where water is at least 20 inches deep. It recommends keeping cold-sensitive taro and tropical water lilies in a pond or tub of water in a location that stays above 50°F. Follow species-specific guidance if your plants are not among those listed. Do not discard aquatic plants into natural waterways.
Consider the pond’s risk factors
Before choosing winter equipment or a management approach, take stock of the pond’s volume and shallow areas, fish population, summer vegetation, and remaining decaying material. Illinois Extension discusses 25% of a pond at an ideal depth of 8 feet or more as a way to decrease winterkill risk in the ponds it addresses; this is not a design prescription for every garden pond. Its guidance also gives 10–20% aquatic vegetation during the growing season as contextual advice and cautions that excessive summer growth or late-season treatment can increase susceptibility to winterkill.

- NATURAL FINISH: Stone finish complement’s your pond’s surroundings.
How to manage ice and oxygen during winter
Consider surface or shallow aeration
If ice forms and oxygen is a concern, Illinois Extension recommends considering surface aeration that maintains some open water. If you use a bottom diffuser during warmer months, its winter guidance is to move it to the surface or a shallow area. Equipment placement matters: do not assume a summer setup is appropriate under winter conditions.
Penn State Extension says aeration need not run continuously all winter in the ponds covered by its guidance: turn it on when ice forms and leave it off when the pond is ice-free. Follow the equipment maker’s directions and account for local conditions. The extension sources discuss aeration and keeping an open area, but do not compare particular brands, prices, efficiency, or product performance.

Clear snow only when the method is safe
Penn State Extension recommends keeping about 30% of the ice free of extended snow cover, if it is safe to do so, so light can reach aquatic plants. Do not walk on ice or use a snow-clearing method unless conditions make it safe. No percentage of cleared ice makes unsafe ice safe to cross.
Choose an approach that fits the pond
Virginia Cooperative Extension lists pond heaters, floating de-icers, bubble balls, air bubblers, passive solar options, and hand removal among possible methods for preventing a water garden from freezing solid. These are options, not a product ranking or a guarantee that any one method fits every pond. A small ornamental pond, a deeper pond with fish, and a pond in a prolonged hard freeze may have different needs.

What to monitor through winter
Check water level and general pond conditions periodically. Virginia Cooperative Extension advises that the water level should not drop significantly through winter. If you have fish, keep their needs in mind when assessing ice cover and any aeration setup. Avoid disturbing the pond simply to follow a fixed schedule: respond to actual conditions and the requirements of your plants, fish, and equipment.
When comparing winter management options, consider the function you need—maintaining open water, adding oxygen, or helping a small water garden avoid freezing solid—along with placement, pond type and depth, fish and plant needs, and local freeze conditions. The extension guidance does not establish a universally best method.
