The cut may remove only short sections at the ends; use guide rails for later passes until you have a flat face running the length of the log. If you have a different kind of mill, check its instructions: orientation rules vary by equipment.
Plan around the bend before cutting
Decide whether you need straight boards or pieces that keep the log’s natural curve. Then assess the sweep (the log’s lengthwise bend), its length and diameter, and any visible defects. These factors affect how much usable lumber you can recover and which cuts make sense.
A chainsaw-milling manual notes that crooked logs generally yield less than straight ones. Milling shorter sections can reduce the effect of the curvature and may improve recovery. If the bend is useful for a project, retaining it may be better than trying to produce straight boards; the manual gives boat knees and specialty craft or furniture work as examples. There is no universal bucking length or cut sequence for every log.
Mill a crooked log with a chainsaw frame mill
- Assess the log and intended lumber. Note the bend’s direction and severity, the log’s length and diameter, visible defects, and the desired board shape.
- Choose whether to mill it whole or in shorter pieces. Shorter sections can reduce the effect of the curve; keeping the full bend may suit a project that needs curved stock.
- Secure the log against rolling. The frame-mill manual calls for adequate wedging, and smaller-diameter logs may need additional restraint. Use a securing method suitable for your mill and worksite.
- Make the first cut on the concave side. Set up the frame mill so it can travel along the inside of the bend. The first pass may cut only short sections at the ends rather than creating a continuous flat face.
- Keep using guide or slabbing rails as needed. Later passes may also need rails until you establish a flat reference face along the log. Once that face runs the full length, continue milling from it.
- Reassess after each pass. The log’s shape, mill setup and intended board sizes determine what remains recoverable. The manual does not prescribe one thickness or sequence for every log.

Do not apply one mill’s orientation rule to another
The first-cut guidance above is for a chainsaw frame mill. The Food and Agriculture Organization’s Frame Saw Manual describes different instructions for the industrial equipment it covers:
- Log-frame saw: Turn the log so the sweep is on the downward side, then align its centerline with the blades’ centerline.
- Cant frame: Align a crooked cant so the main yield falls within the sawn surface on the inside of the sweep.
These directions describe the manual’s frame-saw arrangements; they are not universal rules for portable mills. The manual also cites an earlier Swedish log-quality standard of 25 mm of even sweep per 1.5 m, or 75 mm over a 4.5 m log. That is historical technical context, not a current universal acceptance or safety limit. See the FAO Frame Saw Manual.

Decide whether the log is worth milling
A crooked log is not automatically unusable. Oregon State University Extension says gradual, uniform sweep may still be acceptable to a mill and offers a regional rule of thumb: if about half the log’s length is straight, it may be merchantable. It also says a merchantable sawlog usually needs to be at least 5 inches in diameter at the small end. These are regional guidelines, not universal buying rules; species, defects, log quality and local markets matter. See Oregon State University Extension’s Small-scale harvesting for woodland owners.
Compare the likely usable recovery and labor with what you want from the wood. If you have one or a few logs, asking a local portable-sawmill operator about the job is another practical option; cost and availability depend on your area.

Industrial curve sawing is a separate option
Some industrial sawmills use curve-sawing systems designed to follow a log’s sweep. Oklahoma State University Extension describes stationary-saw and movable sashgang, or “wiggle box,” approaches. Its 2018 fact sheet reports productivity improvements of up to 10 percent for softwood and hardwood sawmills. That figure applies to the industrial sawmill context described there—not to a chainsaw-mill attachment or an individual log. Some boards produced by curve sawing retain sweep. A crooked log can shift or roll, so do not begin until it is adequately restrained for the equipment and worksite. Follow the saw and mill manufacturers’ instructions for securing the log, compatible equipment and cutting procedure.

A chainsaw chain can be pinched or stopped, creating kickback, pushback or pull-in hazards. The University of Missouri Extension advises operators to watch for conditions that can pinch the chain and to handle the saw properly; its guidance is not a complete safety procedure for milling. Consult University of Missouri Extension’s Operating a Chain Saw Safely along with the instructions for your actual saw and mill. For industrial sawmill machinery, OSHA’s carriage guidance addresses dogging logs, cants or boards during sawing and carriage-travel safeguards; it applies to the workplace machinery described, not as a substitute for portable-mill instructions: OSHA, Sawmills: Log Carriages and Carriage Runways.
