A Princeton-led 2024 study found that a carefully engineered, bone-inspired cement material reached up to 5.6 times the fracture toughness of a monolithic brittle counterpart, without sacrificing specific strength. That is a result from tested specimens—not a fivefold increase in ordinary concrete strength, and not evidence that the design is ready for construction.
What does it mean for concrete to mimic human bone?
The comparison is architectural, not chemical. The researchers took inspiration from cortical bone—the dense outer shell of a femur—which contains tube-like structures called osteons embedded in an organic matrix. They incorporated cylindrical and elliptical tubes into cement paste to create a material with a similar tubular architecture.
In the bone-inspired material, the tubes alter how a crack moves through the cement. Rather than allowing a crack to extend freely, the designed structure can trap or delay it. Crack growth can then proceed in controlled steps, dissipating energy as it goes. Princeton describes this as a way to design fracture behavior into the material.
Tube geometry and arrangement matter: size, shape, and orientation influence the result. Simply adding more hollow space does not necessarily make a material tougher.

Is it really five times tougher?
In its 2024 paper in Advanced Materials, the Princeton team reported fracture toughness up to 5.6-fold higher than a monolithic brittle counterpart, without sacrificing specific strength. Princeton Engineering’s announcement described the material as 5.6 times more damage-resistant than standard counterparts. Those are the sources’ respective descriptions of the comparison; neither means all concrete is five times stronger.
Strength and toughness describe different properties. Strength concerns how much load a material can bear. Fracture toughness concerns its resistance to cracking and the spread of damage. The reported result is about fracture resistance in tested specimens, not a general improvement in compressive strength, durability, or performance in every application.

How does the design control crack growth?
When a crack meets the tubular features, the geometry can interrupt or redirect its progress. Instead of one sudden, uncontrolled extension, the crack may advance in smaller, controlled steps. Those interactions require energy, which helps explain the improvement in measured fracture toughness.
As doctoral researcher Shashank Gupta put it, “What makes this stepwise mechanism unique is that each crack extension is controlled, preventing sudden, catastrophic failure.” The point is not that a crack cannot form, but that the architecture is intended to influence how it propagates.

How was the material made and tested?
Princeton describes a hybrid approach combining 3D printing and casting. New Atlas reports that the researchers 3D-printed a polyvinyl-alcohol tubular template, created a negative mold, and cast the cement material. The outlet also describes three-point bending and single-edge-notch bending tests. These procedural details are reported by New Atlas; the result should be understood as laboratory fabrication and fracture testing, not a field demonstration.

For construction, the open question is whether the engineered geometry can be manufactured consistently and scaled while retaining its fracture behavior and useful strength. The reported result alone does not answer questions about cost, placement, long-term durability, code compliance, or performance under real service conditions.
Reza Moini, Princeton assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering, explained the counterintuitive premise: “One expects the material to become less resistant to cracking when hollow tubes are incorporated.” His team’s design instead uses the tubes as part of a deliberate crack-control architecture. Moini described the approach as applying “theoretical principles of fracture mechanics and statistical mechanics to improve materials’ fundamental properties ‘by design’.”
